Levis Releases Replica of Albert Einsteins Classic Menlo Cossack Leather Jacket

You don't need to be a genius to find the perfect leather jacket ... but you can dress like one. Levi's has just released a near-exact replica of Albert Einstein's famous Menlo Cossack Jacket and it'll have you looking quite smart.

Like Steve Jobs and his turtleneck or Mark Zuckerberg and his hoodie, Albert Einstein and his Levi’s leather jacket were equally inseparable for decades, sprouting at least one iconic image of the physicist lounging “in disguise” in his signature stylish piece. 

The 166-year-old clothing company has recreated the garment before, but the 2019 reproduction of this historic leather jacket is a spitting image of its original — from every fiber of its 100-percent Italian sheep leather right down to the very label at the collar. The only difference, of course, is that the current version is black as opposed to the rich, warm brown that Einstein originally wore. Peep a black-and-white photo of the genius in his jacket, though, and today's darker-hued version actually seems far more recognizable.

A limited release of 500 jackets dropped on December 4. Packaged in a special edition box, each one cleverly comes with a replica of the auction paddle that was used to bid on this fashionable piece of history when it was acquired by Levi Strauss & Co. at a Christie's auction back in 2016. 

Even the scent of the jacket has been recreated through Levi's partnership with Brooklyn-based perfume house D.S & Durga. Evoking notes of pipe tobacco, papyrus manuscripts, and — of course — vintage leather, a small bottle of cologne is also included with a classic aroma that intends to transport the wearer back in time... and maybe even inspire a genius idea or two.

Levi's Menlo Cossack Jacket retails for $1,200 and can be purchased at Levi.com and in select Levi's stores.
