Patagonias Worn Wear Resale Business Opens Storefront in Colorado

Had enough of all the commerce-driven insanity of this past weekend? Patagonia's got a little feel-good news to share in the spirit of Giving Tuesday.

The American company’s resale business, Worn Wear, has opened its first store — in Boulder, Colorado — where consumers can shop gear that's "better than new" in the name of sustainability.

Worn Wear officially launched in 2017 with a simple mission of rescuing clothes, effectively keeping them out of already-overflowing landfills. Essentially, Patagonia buys products (in good condition) from customers in exchange for store credit. The garments are salvaged and sorted, then deconstructed and reconstructed into one-of-a-kind clothing items for the brand's ReCrafted collection. Of course, everything is thoroughly cleaned along the way, but Patagonia's website notes that some items may show "slight signs of use from a previous life."

The Worn Wear storefront in Boulder will carry this ReCrafted collection along with original garments, and will also play host to a series of workshops dedicated to repairing salvaged apparel.

Founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia has a long history of supporting practices that are respectful to the earth, and has been committed to raising awareness of the downsides of consumerism. In fact, they even ran an anti-consumerism ad campaign called Don't Buy This Jacket in the New York Times in 2013. On Black Friday. Smack dab in the middle of the holiday shopping season. In the ad, the company made clear its commitment to lighten their environmental footprint, and its duty to inspire ongoing solutions for environmental change on a grander scale.

Some might call that a pretty risky business move. However, to this day, Patagonia is a six hundred-million-dollar business with more than fifty stores worldwide and a booming e-commerce offering. You might even say it's booming because of its obligation to cut down on consumerism.

The Boulder location of Worn Wear will remain open and active until early 2020 if you'd like to visit in person and perhaps buy more thoughtfully this holiday season.
