1. Gamify Everything

This is something I've stressed before, and it is still important. When it comes to productivity, systemization is key. It means turning everything into, you guessed it, a game. Consider breaking down all your tasks into components – the different steps you have to take in order to complete your tasks, like an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

Gamify your tasks by breaking them into more doable sections.

Secondly, set specific goals for the day. You can take it a step further by breaking down the smallest of tasks into sequential steps. Finally, you need to set time limits – and you need to stick to them. This is key because without a deadline you can spend hours-upon-hours on a single project with no end in sight. Even if doing everything is unrealistic – it's better to turn something in than nothing at all.

2. Following A Plan

As far as tips for productivity go, this one is quite simple. Following the same general idea of systemizing your work, you need to formulate a strategy. You'll feel as though you can never deviate from the plan – not even a little bit. If you think this is efficient, you'd be wrong.

planning out

Don't over plan. Sometimes it pays to go with the flow.

Flexibility is key. Life happens – you never know when your kids will get sick or if you'll be assigned a more urgent task. Always allow a margin for surprise in your planning.

3. Getting Chip Implants In Your Brain

They totally exist. There are implants out there that speed up your reading by 200%. We're talking 15 minutes a book…

Do the implants exist? No, but can you read through a book in a mere 15 minutes? Yes! This is where services like Blinkist come into play. As a busy guy, you may not have the energy to put into a whole novel.

4. Rely On Peer Pressure

In school, we're always taught that peer pressure is terrible – that we should ignore it at all costs. It's true to an extent. You don't want to give in to things that could prove detrimental to your health and status. However, peer pressure can be a powerful motivator – that's where this tip for productivity comes in.

Holding yourself accountable to a friend will make you more productive.

You need to make yourself beholden to someone, whether it be a friend or a family member. An example could be the gym – you may not want to go by yourself, but if you've got somebody waiting on you to work out together then it's a different story.

5. Know What Goes Into Your Mouth

Talking about proper diet is almost cliche these days, but it matters nonetheless. Nutrition can have a significant impact on your energy levels, which translates directly into productivity. You might not notice the effects immediately, but this is the long game. Do your research, be consistent, and hold off on the bacon.

6. Giving Up On Willpower

That's right, gentlemen. As far as tips for productivity go, the best advice I can give you is to give up. Productivity is a myth, and it'll just never happen…

office work happy

Make your work efficient and fun… your sanity depends on it!

I'm just kidding.

What I mean is to stop tackling the day with reckless aggression – to stop trying to plow through each and every task as it comes. It may be suitable for an 80s montage, but not for you. Once again, it's critical that you plan out your tasks and break them down. Instead of going the most direct route, think about efficiency: The quickest way you can solve problems with minimal stress.

7. Banning Email

It's so easy to get lost in emails – trust me, I know. As somebody who owns multiple businesses, I'm always getting bogged down in the inbox. I learned the hard way that if I wanted to get ANYTHING done, then I had to put emails on the backburner.

morning routine work

Always make sure you have a time of day set aside to check emails. Don't let it slow you down.

My advice to you, whether you're a receptionist or a CEO, is to allot a specific time to check emails every day. Perhaps you might prefer to check them first thing in the morning in order to get caught up before the workday begins. You might be the kind of man that checks them right after your lunch break to see if any urgent issues have arisen.

Either way, the point is to prevent yourself from getting bogged down in the swamp that is your business email's inbox.

8. Buying Pens & Paper

It's never too late to go back to basics when it comes to tips for productivity. That means taking a step back from the countless so-called conveniences of our technological age, and writing sh*t down!

Writing your tasks down every morning will help you prioritize and overcome them.

Something I do on a daily basis is conduct triage. These are the brief 15 minutes or so that I spend every morning writing a quick list of everything I intend to accomplish. It may not be perfect every single time, but it gives me a much better picture of the challenges on any given day… and how I can overcome them.

9. Keeping “No” As Your Default Answer

This may sound a tad pessimistic. Most would advise you to emulate that Jim Carrey Movie, Yes Man – saying yes to EVERY opportunity presented to you so that you can experience new things. There is merit to that, but not when you have a full plate already. In cases like these – cases where you have work to do, where you have a family and you need to put meat on the table – this is not practical.

know when to say no

Feeling overwhelmed? Take a step back and evaluate where and when you should start saying no more often.

Instead, embrace the power of NO. Your time is valuable, and I'm not talking about your office time either, I'm talking about those precious moments you get to spend with the wife and kids. Think about them – think about the hours you can dedicate to being a hell of a family man by simply saying no to worthless tasks. Know where your time is best spent, and then every YES will be infinitely more valuable.

10. Having A Place To Scream (And Think)

Have you ever watched Youtube personalities like Robert Frank and Alan Roberts? Whether you agree with them or not, they have one thing in common: They made their channels by screaming inside their cars. They vent their thoughts on a variety of topics, and people find that engaging.

Am I saying to become a Youtube star operating out of your driver's seat? No. What I am saying is that you should find an absolutely quiet spot. A spot where you can reflect, reevaluate, and if necessary… scream. You'd be surprised what this can do for your focus – it's relaxation, it's personal time, but it's productive nonetheless.

Just make sure it's isolated enough that others can't hear!

11. Knowing How To Have Fun

We never associate fun with productivity and that's a problem. Productivity isn't just about work, it's also about recharging the batteries. It's about taking time for yourself to make time for the people and activities that you love. They might even be menial things like racing your dog or playing catch with your son.

Work hard, play hard – great words to live by.

While you should always strive to finish your work, even if you've put too much on your plate you need to work in a cut-off point for the sake of your sanity. This is especially true if you have a remote job and work from home, where the lines between your professional and personal life are easily blurred.
