Super Bowl Squares: How They Work, How to Fill Them Out and How You Can Win

Super Bowl LIV is nearly here, and it’s a hotly-anticipated matchup between Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs and Jimmy Garoppolo’s San Francisco 49ers. However, if you're not a fan of either team, you might not have much interest invested in the game. Sure, you'll go to your buddy's Super Bowl party and enjoy the decadent food, ridiculous commercials and what's sure to be an incredible half-time show from J.Lo and Shakira ... but what if there was a way to inject some real excitement into football's biggest day no matter which teams are on the field?

Well, it's about time you're introduced to Super Bowl squares. Whether you've never heard of them before, or you've already joined one and still have no clue how they work, have no fear. We're breaking down the whole process for you right here.

Also known as Super Bowl boxes or pools, these 10x10 grids feature 100 squares where players stake their claim to a pair of numbers with the hopes that they'll correspond to the score of the game. Whether you're playing for money, snacks or just bragging rights, it's a fun way for partygoers to have stakes in the game even if they're just a casual fan.

If you want to set up your own, it's actually quite easy thanks to CBS Sports putting together a very official-looking template you can print out for yourself.

On the outside of the grid, the numbers 0-9 are placed randomly along the top and the left side, effectively assigning a numeric value to each row and column. One team will be designated for the horizontal axis, and the other team for the vertical axis. These assignments can occur before or after everyone has picked their boxes, but beware that anyone with any knowledge of football scoring is sure to grab the most coveted boxes first, so it may be a little unfair.

Once everyone has chosen their box (or boxes), it's time to sit back and wait for kickoff. The score at the end of each quarter will determine the winners throughout the game based on the last digit that each team puts up on the scoreboard. For example, if your box is Chiefs 0, 49ers 7, and the Chiefs score 20 points while the 49ers score 17, you win.

Traditionally, a new winner is determined at the end of each quarter with the biggest prize awarded for the final score at the end of game, but there are variations if you really want to up the stakes. For instance, you could determine winners after each minute on the clock, giving your players 60 different chances to win.

However you decide to play, it’s a fun way to get everyone at your Super Bowl party excited about the game even if they can't tell a forward pass from a fumble.
