1. How Do You Prepare Your Skin Before Shaving?

Take A Hot Shower

Not only do you waste less time, but you also reap the benefits of steam – it opens the pores and softens the hairs enough for the blade.

It also drastically lessens your chances for nicks and bumps.

This is why barbers will often apply a hot towel for a few minutes prior to the shave itself.

morning shower

Hot showers help open the pores on your face and get it ready for shaving.

After showing, make sure you wash your face with warm water. Use a quality natural men's facewash to gently remove dirt, oil and other pollutants from your skin in preparation for the next stage.

Avoid any face cleansers containing alcohol – it can dry out and can irritate your skin.

Apply a Men's Natural Pre-Shave Oil

natural mens shaving oil

A natural men's pre shave oil makes the shaving process a lot smoother!

Pre-shave Oil smooths your skin and provides lubrication to ensure the blade glides effortlessly across your face.

Apply several drops of your natural pre shave oil to your palms, then rub together and press onto the areas to be shaved.

Look for a pre shaving oil containing natural ingredients – avoid cheaper products because they could contain chemicals and synthetic fragrances which will dry out irritate your skin.

A good natural men's shaving oil should contain ingredients like Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Coconut Oil and Cinnamon Leaf Oil.

Now you're ready to rock.

2. Lather Up

What To Look For (And What To Avoid)

The chemicals you want to avoid in shaving creams are called parabens, which are linked to asthma. An alarming amount of inexpensive shaving creams are also made with propane.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a cleaning chemical that strips your skin of the essential oils needed to shield it from the blade.

Fragrance is a vague term used to describe any number of harmful toxins.

Avoid these at any cost.

What should you look for?

A shaving cream or natural men's shaving gel.

Which you go for is down to personal preference but I prefer shaving gels because they're clear – meaning I can see where I'm shaving.

Look for natural ingredients like White Tea Leaf Extract, Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Allantoin and Vitamin E which help protect and soothe your skin while you shave.

natural mens shave gel

VITAMAN's natural shaving gel for men is clear so you can see exactly where you're shaving. It's also free from chemicals and synthetic fragrances, meaning it won't dry and irritate your skin.

Choose The Right Brush

The right brush is essential. You have a wealth of choice here without sacrificing quality. The main factor to consider is stiffness.

Boar and horsehair brushes are stiffer and retain less water than badger fur. It can make lathering more of a chore, but it will also make for a more durable brush.

Generally speaking, rougher bristles draw the best lather from hard soaps while cream is better suited for softer brushes.

Application

We're getting down to business.

If you opted for a soap bar, then you can swirl the brush right on it. If cream is your go-to, then apply a dime-sized drop of it to the inlay of the shaving bowl and swirl away. Keep going until you get a creamy, yogurt consistency.

Once it's ready, apply it generously to your face and neck. This is the most relaxing part of the process and there is no time limit, so massage away. Make sure you are fully coated.  In two minutes or so, the hair will be softened enough to break out the blade.

Note that Shaving gels don't lather like cream – so just apply generously to the areas you want to shave and leave a visible layer on your skin.

3. Get The Right Blade For The Job

Your choice of razor has drastic consequences. It can either give the smoothest shave you've ever felt, or it can draw blood.

Straight Razors

Straight razors are the most traditional blades. They are also the most terrifying. You'll need a leather strop to go with the straight razor before each session. Running the blade back and forth against the strop buffs it and removes residue. Doing this seems rather intimidating, though – you might scare your girlfriend away. These razors will lend you the smoothest shave, but they're also more likely to cut you if you're not careful. Steady hands are key.

Straight razors are also works of art. You'll see them in a plethora of designs and materials; handles made from bone, horn, or wood. Blades can be made from Damascus Steel, and you can find them in all shapes and sizes. It's an opportunity to express yourself through the tool you use.

Straight razors will give you the best shave… if you're careful.

Safety Razors

Safety razors are solid options if you want a classic shave without worrying about hurting yourself. They also have a nice heft toward the top, allowing you to let gravity do the work. You can also replace the blades with ease. When it starts pulling hair, you'll know it's time to change it up.

Cartridge Razors

Cartridge razors are the most common and vary wildly in quality. They can work when you're in a jam and need razors fast, but they're seldom long-term investments.

4. Shaving

The Basics

Going with a straight or safety razor? You'll have to watch the angle you're working with. Shaving with the blade at a 30-degree angle is highly recommended as it deals maximum effect with minimal risk. Again, there is no hurry – make as many passes as you need to, but avoid shaving bare skin. Reapply the lather as needed.

shaving with the grain

Shaving with the grain is the safest option.

With, Or Against The Grain?

There are countless infographics out there that over-explain shaving for men. For the sake of your sanity, just follow these steps…

  1. With the grain.
  2. Across the grain.
  3. (Optional) Against the grain.

No charts needed. Just look at the direction your hair grows and go with it. Your mustache, for example, probably grows away from your nose. The hair on your cheeks probably grow downward, and so forth.

The reason that number 3 is optional is that it's risky, especially if you have sensitive skin. Feel free to skip this one.

It's perfectly normal to cut yourself – especially if it's your first time with the blade. An alum pen (aluminum sulfate) will mitigate the bleeding. It's a natural mineral with more than 4,000 years of heritage dating back to the Egyptians, who also used it for shaving. It helps to tighten the pores and stop minor cuts in their tracks.

5. Post-Shave Skincare

Why Have A Post-Shave Regimen?

Shaving is hard on the skin. Not only are you removing hair, but you're also peeling off skin with each stroke of the razor.

It's exfoliation on steroids.

This is perfectly healthy and natural, but it leaves the skin vulnerable.

Always use a natural after shave balm after shaving, then protect your skin with a natural moisturizer for men.

Even experienced men get knicks. If left untreated, they can get infected. Skin irritation is also extremely common, resulting in flaky skin. Do not underestimate the importance of a post-shave routine!

The Steps

The first thing you need to do is rinse your face with cold water.

It sounds unpleasant, but cold water helps close the pores and capillaries. This is perfect if you cut yourself and need to stem the blood flow.

Cold water is also better at retaining moisture in the skin.

Next, pat your skin dry. Make sure to use the softest towel you have, because anything rough will aggravate the irritation.

Now apply a natural After Shave Balm. Avoid anything containing alcohol – which can dry your skin – and go for a product made from natural ingredients like Witch Hazel – which cures inflammation through the use of gallic acids and antioxidants, and can also reduce skin irritation by up to 27%.

natural mens shave balm

A natural after shave balm soothes and hydrates your skin post shave.

Finally – use a quick absorbing natural Face Moisturizer for men to give your face another layer of protection and complete the shaving process.

Summary – Shaving For Men

There you go, gentlemen – the perfect shaving routine for men.

You'd be surprised how therapeutic a thorough shave is, and you won't regret it. Just remember, preparation is key.

Always use men's shaving products made from natural ingredients and take your time.

Your shaving routine should be an enjoyable ritual, not a painful chore!
