What makes a man stylish?

Is the amount he spends on his clothes? Is the brands he wears?

No. It comes down to taking care of the details – the things 99% of men don't do. It's this attention to detail which separates the stylish man from the crowd.

Trust me – the small things matter so in today's article, I give you the 11 outfit tricks you need to look instantly more stylish.

Style Hack 1. Use Hand Sanitizer as Stain Remover

Hand sanitizer is everywhere now – but did you know it's also an effective stain remover? This is because hand sanitizer contains a high concentration of alcohol.

It'll work on everything from food spills to ink stains. Just apply it to the stain and rub it in. Let it set for 10 minutes and then wash.

Oh – and if you're out and about, just apply the hand sanitizer and allow it to dry.

Style Hack 2. Match Your Trouser Color to Your Belt

Now we all know that we are supposed to match our belt color to our shoe color. But, this hack will allow you to appear taller than you actually are.

You don’t have to match exactly but a similar shade or color will work fine. Dark pants = dark belt. Light pants = light belt.

By using a low-contrast belt, this will balance your torso proportions more and make someone with a short legs to have longer leg line making them appear taller.

Most of the time you will do this without thinking about it. It’s important to have belts in all colors for this though and of course the best bang for your buck is Anson Belts.

Style Hack 3. Hang Your Pants Properly

Want your pants to look better? Running out of drawer space?

Perfect solution: hang your pants. The important part is doing this correctly.

For pants with a crease or pleat:

  1. Grab the pants from the bottom
  2. Fold along the crease
  3. Gently drape them over the hanger bar

For pants without a crease or pleat:

  1. Fold the pants in half and drape over the hanger bar

It’s important to note that if you have a hanger with hanger clips to clip your pants with them (as that is what they are for).

If you don’t have clips, just be sure to equally distribute the weight of the pants on each side of the hanger bar so it doesn’t slip off. Also, be gentle when moving them to the side to avoid them from falling as well.

Style Hack 4. Use a Cartridge Razor to Shave Nubs Off a Sweater

Sweaters by nature get pilling on it. What is pilling you ask?

It’s basically when a group of fibers break, tangle and mat together on your sweater. This is not an attractive look for anyone to try and wear.

So when you pull out your sweater, take a cheap cartridge razor and shave your sweater. Be gentle as you would with your face and shave over all the nubs and pills you see.

It might be easier for your to be wearing the sweater while you do this. You can also get a sweater shaver but save the money and use a cartridge razor.

Style Hack 5. Use Cooking Oil to Replace Shave Cream

We’ve all been there — you’re about to shave in the morning and your realize you’re out of shaving cream.

Never fear, use a cooking oil.

I wouldn’t use this all the time, but in a pinch, it works great. First make sure to wash your face with warm water. Then, grab your olive oil and use it as you would a shave cream.

Since oil is a natural lubricant, it will allow your razor to gently glide across your face. For extra protection, you can dip your razor into olive oil as well.

Feeling a little dry after shaving? Use the same olive oil to moisturizer your skin.

Again, this isn’t great to do all the time but in-between grocery store trips, this works well.

Style Hack 6. Avoid Razor Burn – Gamify Shaving

On the topic of shaving, razor burn sucks. Right?

Well there’s an easy way to avoid it. Turn it into a game.

Hear me out…

Most of you guys have mowed your lawn before right? Once you go over one spot of grass, it’s cut and you’ll only go back over it to catch a little bit you missed. Use this same concept with your face.

Apply your shaving cream (or olive oil) and shave using small strokes. Only go over a section once. I’m sure you have missed some spot and this is when you reapply your shave cream and go over it again.

Don’t do it without reapplying the cream. This is what leads to razor burn. Turn your shaving routine into a lawn mowing or snow shoveling game.

Style Hack 7. Wrinkled shirt? Leverage a Blazer!

Along the lines of all of us being busy, this trick is simple and can save you. If you forget to iron your shirt or you don’t have enough time to, throw on a blazer over it to hide the wrinkles.

Obviously, your collar, the front placket and cuffs will be seen so make sure those are presentable. The majority of the shirt won’t be seen. This can be done with a causal jacket too.

Save yourself some time and hide your wrinkles.

Style Hack 8. Store Your Pocket Squares in Your Jackets

On the topic of blazers and sport coats, it’s time to store your pocket squares in your jackets. I do this all the time and it just saves me tons of time. I pre-fold them and stuff them into my pocket square pocket and leave them in there.

Storing your pocket squares in your jackets will save you time as you can pre-match and fold them before the day you wear them.

Just be sure to adjust your pocket square when you put the jacket on. Over time, they can fall into the jacket pocket and won’t look the way you want them to.

Style Hack 9. Leverage Your Eye Color in Your Style

eye color in outfit

Eyes are the window to the soul and your eye color is the window to your style. You need to leverage your eye color when picking what colors to use in your style.

Now you don’t need to match your eye color exactly, just mimic. For example if you have blue eyes, bring this into your clothing. It could be a pocket square, it could be a jacket: be creative.

By doing this, people will notice and they will notice your eyes more. You will have a more striking look, and leave a lasting impression on someone. This will also take some of the “guess work” out of finding what colors work best for you.

Style Hack 10. Experiment with Casual Ties

Guys, it’s time to embrace the casual tie.

I know that these days we seem ties as being formal but there are some great casual ties out there that you can wear to stand out a little more from everyone else.

Wool ties, knitted ties or a fun bow-tie are all great options to bring into a casual outfit. You’re not wearing them because you have to but because you want to. People will notice.

A warning though: Don’t wear that are not made of a fabric material. I’m looking at you with those wooden ties out there. This is atrocious. Steer clear, gents.

Style Hack 11. Shine Your Shoes RIGHT After Wearing Them

The perfect time to shine your shoes is right after wearing them. Why? The dirt will be easier to remove.

On top of that, you won’t forget to touch them up when you need to. I always forget to shine my shoes and the best time is to do so right after wearing them.

Just take a minute to shine each pair. Make sure to set down some newspaper to avoid a mess.
