We Hand-Picked The 4 Biggest Haircut Trends For Winter

November 30, 2021BruceDayne

The other day, hairstylist Tommy Buckett sold me on the merits of a winter haircut. I didn't want to go short, or touch the color, but I sat back and let the scissors do their thing after Buckett said: "A fresh cut is just going to make your hair look more expensive."

As a hairdresser, he's is biased. However, when I got up from the swivel chair, my hair a few inches lighter, almost bouncing around my shoulders, I was convinced I looked better, more put together, than I did 45 minutes prior when I walked in wearing a claw-clip bun. Isn't that the benefit of a good haircut? Afterwards, your hair often looks its best, no fuss — which, if you ask me, is a priceless gift heading into the holidays.

If you're inspired to book in for your own salon appointment, scroll through our seasonal style guide, ahead, to check out some of this winter's trending cuts.

Shag Cut

Since Fashion Week, the shag haircut, or the wolf cut slash modernized mullet, has continued to feel trendy. Here, celebrity stylist Jenny Cho shows a fresh variation of the shag on Squid Game's Hoyeon Jung: shoulder-length cut with face-framing layers and a long, eyelash-skimming bang.

Modern Bob

If you tried a curtain bang — maybe you cut it last year and let it grow out — consider the curtain bang 2.0., what stylist Yuki, owner of Gavert Atelier Salon, calls a "modern bob," which combines a soft, center-parted fringe and a fresh, above-the-shoulder cut.

Bixie

One of the newest hairstyle trends out of London is what Refinery29's freelance writer Claire Hubble introduces as "the bixie." Fer Porro, a stylist at George Northwood salon in London, tells Hubble that style is a cross between a bob and a pixie. The visual, similar to artist Torin Ashtun's hair: short on top, and a little longer in the back.

Heavy Layers

If you have long hair, and you want to play with the cut without losing any length, consider adding layers throughout. Here, influencer Summer McKeen shows her darker hair in a new, heavily-layered cut, for a little more body and movement around the face.
