The summer is prime time to create a capsule wardrobe full of easy-to-wear pieces. And Finnish design house Marimekko’s latest collaboration puts a fun spin on versatile summer basics. 

On Monday, the print- and-color forward brand announced its partnership with Virginie Hucher, featuring the French artist’s works, which are known for their fluid, abstract silhouettes and bold colors. 

“My first impression when I saw Virginie’s work was that it is super minimal, architectural, graphic, but also very tactile. I was drawn to both the incredible shapes and the perfectly imperfect finishes of her pieces,” says Rebekka Bay, creative director at Marimekko, via press release. “Because the artworks themselves have so much shape, we decided to construct the dresses around the artworks instead.”

The result includes three A-line dresses and a top-and-skirt set in white, blue, brown, and red hues from Hucher’s artworks. “I think that fashion designers and artists alike have always been about artistic expression, and fashion acts as an important tool, it’s a universal language that gives us the opportunity to reveal our identities,” says Hucher. 

This collaboration comes on the heels of Marimekko’s partnership with American brand Mansur Gavriel that resulted in a picnic-ready assortment of strawberry-printed handbags. The brand also recently partnered with Adidas, releasing a flower-printed model of the sportswear giant’s Ultraboost sneakers, as well as gym-ready fits in Marimekko’s bold hues.

There’s an episode in season 4 of Gossip Girl, in which the show’s resident “evil dictator of taste,” Blair Waldorf, is unraveling as she tries to balance a full-time job at W Magazine and a hefty course load at Columbia University. So much so that she shows up at a birthday party wearing two different Roger Vivier shoes, a sign for everyone around her that she’s about to implode her life if she doesn’t take a break. But what if Waldorf was making, dare I say, a statement? 

While I’ve always been against the idea of mismatched shoes, Gucci’s Resort 2023 collection made me reconsider Waldorf’s mishap. Creative director Alessandro Michele unveiled a look that not only put mismatched shoes on the runway, but celebrated the controversial styling, by way of a two-tone black-and-white blouse-and-pants combo, paired with non-matching shoes. 

Michele might be doing this on the runway, but the deliberate mismatching took me back to Sex and the City’s season 3, when Carrie and her crew fly to Los Angeles to escape the monotony of their New York lives. So much so that Carrie forgoes all styling rules and dons different color shoes in metallic hues for their first night out. The statement — probably concocted by the show’s costume designer Patricia Field — signaled that one of the best ways to spice up your life is to break all the rules, even if you look like you rushed out of the house without looking in a mirror. 

After Gucci’s show, I set out to try the trick on my own. While fashion brands like Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP Collection and Charlotte Stone have offered different color shoes for some time now, I figured the best (and frankly most affordable) way to try it for myself was to literally wear two mismatched shoes in one outfit. I first analyzed the references in front of me: I could go all out with contrasting, metallic colors à la Bradshaw, or I could take a tip from Waldorf’s mishap and wear two different shoes that were quite similar to one another. 

As a fan of neutral dressing, I went with the latter because, well, baby steps. I also made sure to choose two pairs of shoes that were the same height because this experiment could not end up with me limping, or worse, a broken hip. I figured a white slip-on sandal with zigzag strings in front could go well with a beige sandal that featured wavy straps. As long as we were going for mismatched, I figured the asymmetry between the two pairs was justified. 

Then, came the styling, which was easier than I imagined. I paired a white tank top — one of the season’s top trends — with a denim jacket and high-waisted shorts, a relatively blank canvas for the weirdness going on with my feet. I added a beige shoulder bag and white sunglasses. If you follow the colors there, you can see the formula: Pair each of your shoes to something in your outfit to make them fit in with the look, just like at Gucci. And it worked: no one — not even my boyfriend, who I went out with wearing the outfit — noticed I was wearing two different shoes (or at least, they were polite enough not to stare).

While this may be a quirky styling tool, much like with Bradshaw, it works wonders when your closet — or even your life — is feeling stagnant. And even when you’re feeling in shambles, accidentally wearing two different shoes by mistake, go with it. It’s a statement.

Prom night has changed dramatically over the past two years. For a while, virtual dances and socially-distanced parties became the norm for Gen Z. But the promise of a great prom comeback is just around the corner, as the 2022 season starts this spring.  

Our editors remember vividly those nights: waiting for a date to ask them out, getting ready to attend the dance, and, most importantly (in our eyes, at least), picking what to wear. Ivy Thompson first started experimenting with her style in middle school. She embraced the Japanese Lolita street style before, at some point in high school, deciding “it wasn’t challenging anymore.” So two years ago, the TikTok creator peeled back the layers of frothy dresses, bows, and knee-high socks and started sewing Victorian-inspired clothing to wear in her everyday life. 

“I was looking into other things I could wear year-round,” says Thompson. “I discovered that there’s actually a pretty robust historical costuming community out there.” Today, she’s a major player in the online Victorian fashion community. Her TikTok account, @thesewloartist, boasts over 670,000 followers and has clocked nearly 10 million likes, showcasing her vast collection of Victorian and Edwardian clothing. “It’s interesting to imagine what people at the time really would have worn and looked like and how they would have interacted with their everyday objects,” she says. 

Thompson teaches her followers about the dress codes and traditions of the era, as well as shows step-by-step guides on how Victorian costumes are layered — the shoes first, of course. All while showcasing her wide collections of dresses and accessories — “my costumes have their own bedroom” — some dating as far back as the early 19th century. But while it may be fun to time travel digitally for online audiences, today’s Victorian fashion fans are also taking their styling to the streets, embodying the lifestyle and mindset of the Victorian era — with many, many twists. 

Named after England’s Queen Victoria, Victorian-era fashion is renowned for its elaborate corsets, petticoats, and bustles, with women’s style dominated by full skirts. Over the past two years, the era’s style has slowly penetrated modern-day fashion, thanks to shows like Netflix’s Bridgerton and the comeback of the Y2K-style corset. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, with a preoccupation for nature and rural living as a form of escapism growing, new fashion aesthetics have emerged online, inspired by Victorian styling. Take cottagecore, for example, which romanticizes agricultural life through the use of prairie dresses and bustiers.

Some Victorian fashion creators on TikTok are not interested in making the era’s style modern though. Margaret O’Neil, who goes by @costumeandconservation on TikTok, is a textile conservation student with a focus on historical costumes. In her videos, she puts on layers of crinolines, corsets, and skirts for her 32,000 followers. Since she first started collecting Victorian costumes, O’Neil has amassed an impressive selection of pieces, including a garment from 1800, her oldest to date. “I always joke that my wardrobe goes from 1820 to 2020,” she says, referring to how she uses vintage pieces as her everyday clothing. 

While she’s genuinely interested in the fashion of the time, O’Neil says that, for conservators, it’s also just one of the easiest periods in history to work with because there’s a lot of material available. That provides an opportunity for conservators to explore old sewing and material techniques. Take a gown from the 1860s, for which O’Neil had to sew an elliptical cage crinoline, a mid-19th century undergarment used to give volume to skirts, that requires hours of hand sewing. 

“It’s a super weird piece of clothing,” she says. “Even looking at the satirical prints of the time, they made fun of it.” When she donned the garment, O’Neil found herself unable to move around her Wilmington, Delaware apartment. “There’s a reason we abandoned this style,” she jokes.

While O’Neil opts for utmost historical accuracy, Thompson is “totally happy to incorporate different styles together”: “I don’t set out to make every single garment as perfectly accurate as I can, because that’s just not me.”

Likewise, creator Lauren Foster approaches Victorian fashion with a more interpretive spin. Based in Pennsylvania, Foster first started sharing videos on TikTok channeling the cottagecore aesthetic before becoming interested in historical costuming. Although she’s collected vintage clothing, Foster is focused on styling garments inspired by Victorian fashion which she gets from the online resale market, rather than wearing exact replicas of costumes from the time. “Most of the clothing that I’ve found is from the 1900s,” she says, referring to the Edwardian era.

Foster’s interest in 19th-century fashion also comes with a desire to break stereotypes in the white-dominated “-core” aesthetics communities. “There are not a lot of people of color in these aesthetics, and when they finally see someone that looks like them, who is not ashamed of putting that lifestyle out there, they really appreciate it,” she says.

As a mother of two living in rural Pennsylvania, she wants to educate others about the fashion and lifestyle of Victorian-inspired aesthetics in real life: “I’ve heard from so many people that they’re afraid of judgment over dressing a certain way or moving to a rural area because that can be dangerous as a Black person in America,” she says. “And they really appreciate that there is some sort of representation.” 

Mostly, Foster is having fun with the clothes she wears. Creating Victorian-inspired content has now become her full-time job, just a year after she first launched her Instagram and TikTok channels. On her account, @theenchantednoir, Foster can be seen wearing Victorian-inspired clothing in modern settings, staging photoshoots that channel the rural 19th-century aesthetic, and highlighting the stories of Black people during Queen Victoria’s time. 

“People are very shocked that there were Black Victorians at all,” she says. “I really feel blessed, honestly, that I’m getting to do something that I feel passionate about, but that’s also helping people in the process.”

On TikTok, these creators welcome their followers to a world where time-traveling is just one corset away, should they embrace the style.

Every morning, Thompson sorts through her wardrobe, picking out a bodice and full skirt that might seem a better fit for the set of Bridgerton than a day of errands in Portland, Oregon. But she still marches outside, unafraid of the onlookers: “I never thought that I would have the opportunity to say this, but yes, this is my style, this is what I look like every day.”

For more than 50 years, diamonds have been the ultimate symbol of love and the go-to gemstone for engagement rings. From songs proclaiming them “a girl’s best friend” to ad campaigns highlighting their eternal power, diamonds are firmly embedded in our culture. But as the lab-grown diamond industry continues to rise in popularity and produce cheaper and more sustainable alternatives to mined diamonds, is the gemstone really forever?

First things first: What is a lab-grown diamond? “A lab-grown diamond is optically, chemically, and physically identical to a natural diamond,” explains Melissa Cirvillaro, chief marketing officer of Lightbox, a subsidiary of De Beers Group that creates lab-grown diamonds, via email. “It is grown in a laboratory over a period of weeks rather than mined from the earth.” The process involves a diamond seed — a thin wafer of existing gemstone — as well as raw carbon and energy, which are then put under conditions that mimic the natural environment where a traditional diamond flourishes. Over the past few years, it’s becoming a popular choice among consumers.

According to Vogue Business, six to seven million carats of lab-grown diamonds were produced in 2020. While mined diamond production still outpaces the lab-grown industry — in comparison, over 110 million carats of diamonds were mined in 2020 — this sector is growing: According to Aether, a lab-grown diamond jewelry brand, the market has grown from 1% to 5% in the past three years alone. Since then, not only have new lab-grown brands launched, but heritage and mainstream brands like De Beers Group and Pandora have adopted lab-grown options into their offering as well.

Why are people foregoing diamonds? 

While the earliest descriptions of diamonds were found in a Sanskrit manuscript dated to 320-296 BCE, the reason many people today own diamonds is thanks to modern-day marketing. Thanks to the legendary “A Diamond Is Forever” campaign launched in 1948, the De Beers company — one of the world’s biggest diamond miners, cutters, and sellers — successfully convinced the world that the only proper way to get engaged was with a diamond ring. This gave birth to the engagement ring industry as we know it today: From 1939 to 1979, wholesale diamond sales climbed in the country from $23 million to $2.1 billion. 

Yet, as consumers have become more aware of the environmental and social impact of their fashion and shopping choices, the question of ethics surrounding diamonds has also been raised. Some argue that this industry has a severe environmental, economic, and social impact on communities where natural diamonds are mined, fueling armed conflicts. Two decades since governments worldwide signed the Kimberley Process, a certification created in 2003 with a mission to reduce the mining and exporting of “blood diamonds,” human rights violations are still being documented in countries where diamond mining occurs. Yet, many still argue that the economic and social benefits are bigger than it seems: the Natural Diamond Council says that over 80% of the net economic benefits of diamond production are retained within their originating countries.

Are lab-grown diamonds more sustainable? 

There are also concerns when it comes to the environmental consequences of mining diamonds. While mined, diamonds require over 120 gallons of water for each carat, according to The Diamond Foundry, a company that produces synthetic diamonds, some lab-grown diamond companies use electricity and fossil fuels for production.

But many lab-grown-diamond companies are trying to extract energy and carbon from resources they claim are more sustainable. Marketed as the first-ever diamond made from air, Aether uses technology that captures carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce its diamonds. “We’re effectively reducing the carbon footprints of our customers and offsetting their impact,” the company’s CEO, Ryan Shearman, tells Refinery29. Aside from turning air into diamonds, Shearman says the company’s facilities and production also rely on clean energy from solar and wind power. Aether is also foregoing the use of other lab-grown diamonds for their seeds (ie. those thin diamond wafers) obtaining them instead from their own products, which they claim are “carbon negative.” 

“Our goal is to be able to not just act as a source of diamond jewelry and have a positive impact for our customers, but also from a business-to-business standpoint to be able to offer diamond seeds out there in the marketplace,” Shearman says. 

Los Angeles-based VRAI is also attempting to reduce the environmental impact of mined diamonds and its own lab-grown production. “We’ve been really focused on showing the beauty and the opportunity that lab-grown diamonds have by showcasing that you can have a luxury product that doesn’t compromise your ethics,” says Mona Akhavi, CEO of VRAI. 

The brand, which is owned by The Diamond Foundry, uses hydropower from the Columbia River in Washington to extract the energy needed to grow their diamonds. (While hydropower can help offset the carbon footprint, the practice has received criticism from environmentalist groups, who have called out the construction of large dams for their harm to wild rivers and fish populations.) 

While many lab-grown-diamond companies claim to be more sustainable than mined diamonds, there is no clear consensus on just how much energy lab-grown diamonds require: A 2011 report by the University of Virginia found that making lab-grown diamonds can use an estimated 20 kilowatt-hours per carat, while numbers provided to the trade publication JCK from “a veteran  [diamond] grower” show that a single-stone high-pressure, high-temperature press — one of two types of machines used to grow diamonds — requires 175 to 225 kilowatt hours per rough carat (a similar amount of energy to what the average American household uses to power a home for seven days).

Are mined diamonds over? 

Beyond ethics and sustainability, multiple reports conclude that diamonds have lost relevance with millennials and Gen Z who are less interested in engagement and marriage than generations before them. As society moves away from the idea of the nuclear family as its bedrock, so do the symbols that used to hold it together. In turn, diamond companies are adapting to fit changing social tides, turning to lab-grown diamonds for cheaper and more sustainable offerings. For proof, see Lightbox, which was founded by De Beers Group in 2018.

Then, there is the generational economic factor — millennials own just 5% of the wealth in the United States — which is makes the cheaper prices of lab-grown diamonds appealing to the demographic. For example, the cheapest available diamond stud earrings at De Beers are sold for $1,150 for a .14 carat diamond, while Lightbox offers a similar pair for $250 including a .25 carat diamond. 

But while lab-grown diamonds are more economical, many argue that they won’t retain their value as much as mined diamonds, which are becoming more rare: Global supply of mined diamonds peaked in 2006 with 176 million carats mined, a level that, according to Bloomberg, will never be reached again. “Natural diamonds are a finite natural resource: the earth is not making any more. So, this rarity makes them a long-term store of value,” Sally Morrison, public relations director at Lightbox, wrote via email. Experts envisioned that, in 2021, there would be a 15 million carat deficit in the supply of mined diamonds, which could lead to a demand in lab-grown diamonds. 

“Fewer and fewer mined diamonds will be available that are coming out of the ground, that means that the gap there can only be filled by lab-grown,” says Shearman. 

Are mined diamonds forever? Maybe not. But thanks to the lab-grown, they will remain eternal.

The catsuit is one of 2022’s style protagonists. Since last year, it rapidly went from being an ‘80s fitness staple to a fashion-forward garment, worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Dua Lipa and championed by designer brands like Balenciaga and Mugler. 

While I’ve previously never thought I would wear a piece that would make me look like an extra in one of Jane Fonda’s workout videos, I became intrigued by the trend after seeing the Balenciaga catsuits that Kim Kardashian wore during her Saturday Night Life press tour in 2021. They looked chic and luxurious, embossed in velvet, rather than the shiny Spandex of the Flashdance era. But most of all, they looked easy to throw on and leave on the house in a, well, flash.

So, I set out to try the trend out for a week. 

The first catsuit I got my hands on was a black lace number from Sarah Regensburger. I decided to test it out at New York Fashion Week this month. What better time to try a statement piece than when everyone else in New York is trying to grab the attention of street-style photographers with equally over-the-top looks? After seeing Kourtney Kardashian in a similar black lace bodysuit, I knew It was now or never. But while the eldest Kardashian sister wore hers with just a trench coat — baring her undies through the thin veil of the bodysuit’s lace — I didn’t have the courage to do the same, especially considering my roommate’s concerned face when I walked out of my room to show her the look. “Do you have to wear it?” she asked. 

Instead, I figured I could wear the catsuit as a base layer under a Selkie puff-sleeve dress that I have continuously described as “my gothic cupcake look.” I accessorized the outfit with a pair of Miu Miu glitter platforms and a Saint Laurent bag. I figured the muted, all-black color scheme would distract from the catsuit’s nakedness and the extravagance of the dress. 

Waiting in line for the Tia Adeola show, I received more compliments than I have for all my looks in the last two years combined and (gasp with me, please!) was actually stopped by a street style photographer. I was amazed at how confident and comfortable I felt with this catsuit, sporting its delicate texture as body adornment. But the next phase of my experiment would be a bit more complicated. 

Knowing the Kardashians have been responsible for the catsuit’s recent popularity, I needed to go to the source: Kim Kardashian’s brand, Skims. I skimmed through the vast selection of catsuits and bodysuits available on the website, choosing a strapless onesie to channel the Y2K era. I felt positive about it when I first opened the bag: the fabric was comfortable and it featured some interesting corseting details on the sides. While it looked good in the mirror, wearing it out was a different story. 

Walking through my Manhattan neighborhood, I could sense people staring at me. I looked at my reflection and realized that the nude hue matched my skin so well that I looked… naked underneath the white shit. To add to that, the top kept rolling down and I’d have to keep pushing it up to prevent me from actually ending up naked on the street. All in all, the look didn’t work for me. While I felt confident enough to wear a sheer catsuit during New York’s prime fashion season, wearing a naked-like jumpsuit on a normal day warranted too many looks from strangers for my taste.

I had one last frontier to conquer with a catsuit on: the gym. For this challenge, I wore a black catsuit from Bandier that featured mesh paneling on the sides. I thought that I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing a catsuit on a treadmill, but I was wrong. Honestly, if I could wear this catsuit for the rest of my life to work out, I would: The fabric is so soft it feels like you’re wearing nothing. I even forgot about the sheer nakedness on the sides and the fact that it was very probable I was sporting a camel toe to the gym. 

While my week in catsuits may have not been a total success, I walked away with a newfound understanding for women who prefer the bodycon onesie lifestyle. On the one hand, it’s a nightmare to sport in public spaces, where going to the bathroom means you’d have to take off all your clothes (similarly to jumpsuits and rompers) to do the deed. On the other, it’s a grab-and-go kind of garment that can be easily accessorized — from sneakers to puff-sleeve dresses — and versatile enough to persuade even the most conservative of dressers (me!) to give a trend a chance (just make sure you empty your bladder before heading out). And isn’t that what fashion is all about?

For the past decade, the fashion industry has spewed a lot of talk about democratization. With the age of social media and the arrival of bloggers-turned-influencers, there was no other way for the industry to stay relevant than to open up its doors. But the geographical, cultural, and economic barriers were still there. Now, fashion is embracing a whole new world that could shake up the status quo once again — the metaverse. 

“There is a huge community of people and platforms that really care about fashion [in the metaverse],” says Mishi McDuff, the founder of Blueberry, a digital wearables company that has sold over 20 million units of virtual clothing. “I just don’t see why [designers] wouldn’t want to offer these collections to everyone from anywhere in the world.”

The conversations around the metaverse and fashion are multi-layered. On one end, there is the sustainability factor: brands can reduce their waste by producing clothing digitally. (While that’s good on the surface level, it’s worth noting that digital clothing created in the form of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, can actually have a substantial carbon footprint: a single NFT carbon footprint can equal to two months of electricity usage for a single resident, for example.) Then, there’s the matter of building a bigger fanbase, one that’s pushed brands like Balenciaga and Gucci to capitalize on digitally-native communities to promote and sell their collections. As mentioned above, there is also an effort to democratize the industry even further, beyond the fashion capitals and invite-only fashion week events. 

“Maybe someone isn’t able to attend New York Fashion Week, but they are able to come see the show in Second Life,” says McDuff, referring to the digital hub for virtual experiences and communities, where some fashion shows are currently being held.

For an industry that’s been slow to embrace progress — including technology; some brands are still doing show check-ins with pen and paper — it’s a big undertaking. Yet it hasn’t stopped some from trying, particularly during the showcase of fall ’22 collections happening right. To see whether the future is virtual shows, I tried to attend one during this New York Fashion Week. Spoiler: I failed.

The first show that announced a virtual experience was Jonathan Simkhai, which promised a digitalized version of its IRL collection through an invite-only virtual event. When the day came — having ignored the fine print from the invite, which instructed me to download an app on my laptop and log in 15 minutes before the show — I attempted to access The Second Life from my iPhone while in-between fashion week events. Of course, I wasn’t able to, only being able to enjoy the clothes from the photos released afterward. It seemed strange to me why a designer would stage a show that could only be accessed via computer in the middle of fashion week, when editors are running frantically around town unable to carry a laptop with them. 

It turns out, virtual shows may not be for us, but rather for people who are already part of the virtual community. According to McDuff, these are avatar editors and influencers, many of whom are outside of the traditional fashion industry: “They do make-believe in Second Life all the time.” 

This kind of dichotomy between reality and virtual fiction is what inspired designer Jonathan Simkhai to go to the metaverse in the first place. “I’m fascinated by the idea that one could be anyone they choose to be in this space, ultimately celebrating different backgrounds, body types, and beauty,” Simkhai wrote via email. “I don’t believe digital will surpass the physical experience, but the optionality introduces a new era for our industry.” (In addition to the Second Life-based show, Simkhai displayed his fall 2022 collection via in-person appointments in New York City during fashion week.)

From Simkhai’s perspective, the metaverse fashion scene and IRL shows should coexist seamlessly. “To me, it’s more about accessibility and community building,” he says. “Activating in the metaverse allows us to reach a customer who maybe isn’t familiar with the brand, but allows them to create a digital identity using the clothes.” So much so that when editors were invited to attend Simkhai’s virtual show, they were asked to send in photos with which the Blueberry and Second Life team would create avatars that would sit in at the virtual show wearing the brand’s clothes. “This was the opportunity to look forward and into the future, analyzing how that could dictate current experiences,” he says. 

Other brands like Imitation of Christ and Maisie Wilen also capitalized on the metaverse and digital wearables this season. “This is the age of disruption and to end this endless dystopia — we have all been displaced and our communities have gotten smaller or been destroyed due to a global pandemic — we are rebuilding and reassessing,” said Imitation of Christ’s founder Tara Subkoff, who partnered with artist Adam Teninbaum to transform physical garments into digital wearables for the show, in a press release. “To be able to create a new community that can travel anywhere and is always there for people is a dream come true for me.” 

The collection reflected Subkoff’s dystopian mentality: Avatars walked through fire-lit forests wearing metallic hoodies, leggings, cut-out tops, and ballgowns that looked like they were made with the last remaining foil on Earth after the great collapse. The message is not a departure from the brand’s longstanding commentary on consumerism and climate change: Last September, Subkoff presented a collection that included scribbles that read “the more you consume, the less you live” over jackets, dresses, and pants. 

This movement is happening outside of New York, too: On Thursday, Plein Sport unveiled a digital collection in partnership with the digital platform and marketplace Decentraland during Milan Fashion Week.

These activations mark the beginning for fashion’s Web 3.0 migration. Following the success of Balenciaga and Gucci in showing their collections and selling digital wearables in the metaverse, Decentraland is hosting its first Metaverse Fashion Week from March 24 to 27. For McDuff, events like these are an opportunity to disrupt the fashion system — from its production cycle to accessibility — and also provide the virtual humans with well-designed clothes: “Fashion needs to be on digital platforms… the same reason we need it in real life is the same reason we need it in digital worlds.”

While I may have not been able to attend a metaverse fashion show just yet, I’m crossing my fingers for a front-row seat soon. Now I just have to figure out: What will my avatar wear?

Anna Sorokin — better known as “Anna Delvey” — made half of New York City think she was a German billionaire heiress by dressing up in Alaïa dresses and Celine sunglasses. Elizabeth Holmes modeled her style after Steve Jobs to charm investors, politicians, and technocrats into believing she could revolutionize the healthcare industry. Even as society can see through these famous grifters — and their crimes — years later, it’s still tempting to admire their style. After all, it takes a lot of work to dress the part. 

“It is like putting on a costume, particularly for female con artists,” says journalist Jessica Pressler, who wrote the New York Magazine articles that inspired the Netflix series Inventing Anna, of which she is also a producer, and the 2019 movie Hustlers, starring Jennifer Lopez. 

“Women are judged to such a huge extent by our exteriors; what you wear is kind of who you are and the details matter,” she says. As a firsthand witness of these personas, Pressler says that “the clothes were their act.”

The key to a successful scam lies in how much a grifter can get others to take them seriously. That often leads to parallels between the ways high-profile scammers get dressed. For example, Pressler says that both Sorokin and the Hustlers women often wore black to up their credibility: “Anna would tend to wear these black little baby doll dresses by Alaïa, and with the Hustlers girls, it was the same; they said they had to tone it down on their dates and that’s why they wore black.” 

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes also capitalized on black to transform herself from Stanford University dropout to Silicon Valley entrepreneur. “The fact that she felt like she wouldn’t be taken seriously really pushed Elizabeth to kind of mimic Steve Jobs’ turtleneck and it was truly to appear like she had no time to focus on shopping but rather Theranos and its success,” says Claire Parkinson, the costume designer for the upcoming Hulu series The Dropout, out on March 3, based on Holmes’ story. 

Parkinson used Holmes’ uniform as a starting point for her work on the series. “The first thing I did with Amanda Seyfried in our fitting was try on the black turtleneck, so she could feel like she knew who the character was becoming,” she recalls. 

To highlight Holmes’ evolution, Parkinson created a sharp contrast between the character’s college uniform and her CEO persona, diving into Y2K fashion that was not particularly stylish, including Abercrombie and American Eagle hoodies, for the early years, and later, sourcing designer garments from The RealReal for Holmes’ pre-turtleneck years. 

“Within the script and the story, there is a time where she is getting more successful with Theranos and she meets a character, who’s a real person and a designer for the first Apple iPhone, and she really was kind of this catalyst to Elizabeth to take her wardrobe seriously,” says Parkinson. The costume designer used this moment in the series to establish the transformation of Holmes’ character. 

For Lyn Paolo, the costume designer for Inventing Anna, the transformation happened in reverse, as audiences first meet Anna in her glory days — scamming New York City’s elite and her not-so-loaded group of friends out of thousands of dollars, allegedly to start an arts foundation and fund her lavish lifestyle — and later, learn how her house of cards fell, landing her in prison. Viewers get to see Sorokin shapeshift from her glitzy persona into an innocent-looking young woman with sober-toned dresses and black choker necklace in the courtroom during her 2019 trial. “People thought of Anna as an amazing fashionista,” says Paolo, who also worked on Scandal. “The coverage she got, even for what she wore in court, was fascinating.” 

“What’s fascinating in the show is that you get to see like 10 different Annas based on different people’s stories,” Paolo adds. “Because she isolated herself with a group of friends each time, they all thought it was something new and fresh, but we see her wearing the same things over and over.”

It’s this consistency, says Pressler, that allows scammers like Sorokin and Holmes to distract people from their actions. “They understood that there were certain different kinds of people that dress a certain way, and that’s a really intelligent move,” she adds. 

Dressing the part can also make you look like you belong. Kari Ferrell, also known as “the hipster grifter,” represents another example of this approach. In the late 2000s, Ferrell preyed upon Williamsburg’s skinny jean-clad hipsters, scamming them out of their money and lying her way into a job at Vice. (Vice Media Group is Refinery29’s parent company.) She got the part because she already looked she belonged. Years after The Observer’s Doree Shafrir wrote about her grift, Ferrell’s distinctive look remained a popular Halloween costume in New York City’s party scene. All it required was a fake chest tattoo, a pair of American Apparel leggings, rectangle-shaped black glasses, and a tube top.

A similar case happened in the mid-2010s when Elizabeth Holmes became an icon of the girlboss generation. In 2015, she received the “Entrepreneur of the Year” prize at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, wearing an all-black two-piece suit with matching pumps. That same year, she appeared on the covers of The New York Times Style Magazine, Inc., and Forbes clad in a similar suit, paired with her signature black turtleneck. 

“She was clearly a mimic,” says Parkinson, referring to her style’s similarity to that of other powerful female entrepreneurs of the era, including Nasty Gal’s Sophia Amoruso, Glossier’s Emily Weiss, and The Wing’s Audrey Gelman. Holmes was able to climb to Forbes’ list thanks largely to the persona she built — one she constructed in part on the basis of a closet full of 100 turtlenecks. 

While Holmes, Sorokin, and Ferrell committed real-life fraud and have all been found guilty, Pressler says their scamming uniforms reveal a larger reality about our culture in general. “It’s not just them; we’re all doing this,” she says, referring to the ways people create personas through style. “Everybody is kind of dressing the part — they were just dressing for the jobs they wanted.”

According to antiquated fashion rules none of us should subscribe to, there are some colors combinations that should never be worn together. Navy blue and black, for example, are often regarded as ugly because (gasp!) they look too similar. Or, purple and green, which is often compared to a certain TV fictional dinosaur who insists we’re a happy family. Yet no color combo is more villanized than pink and red.

It’s the signature combo of Valentine’s Day, with millions of cheesy cards, giant plush toys, and chocolate boxes bearing the scarlet-and-blush combo, all exchanged by people wearing some version of this two-tone formula in the name of love, friendship, and a possible Tinder date. 

Despite it being a color combo that everyone loves to hate, it has long captivated the fashion zeitgeist, with designers and celebs giving the Strawberry Shortcake-approved combination some justice. Back in 2017, Emma Roberts wore a red gown with a pink fur stole by Diane von Fürstenberg to the Met Gala. Later, in 2019, celebs, including Mandy Moore in Brandon Maxwell and Taraji P. Henson in Vera Wang, made headlines for wearing pink-and-red outfits at the Emmy Awards. This year, though, even more designers seem keen on giving the color combo their definite stamp of approval — shushing the haters once and for all. 

Take, for example, the Giambattista Valli spring 2022 lineup, which included a white feather dress featuring pink and red embellishments, paired with crimson sunglasses. Then, there was Portuguese brand Marques’ Almeida, which showed a brighter version of the color combo, in the form of a poplin, asymmetrical pink dress with an attached crossbody red sleeve, as well as a pink slip dress with a scarlet button-down shirt underneath.

Meanwhile, Blumarine showcased a pre-fall 2022 collection full of red-and-pink looks. A light pink stretchy dress with an asymmetrical hemline was paired with shiny red boots, while the reverse happened in a separate outfit. There were also red sweaters, paired with pink cargo pants (yes, the type that Regina George would approve of for Wednesdays!), as well flower chokers and fluffy bags in the color palette. And there’s nothing gimmick-y or juvenile about this full-fledged berry embrace.

There was once a time when people saved up for certain designer handbags, knowing that they would hold their value for years to come. Today, thanks to the boom in the luxury watch market, some women are opting for timepieces rather than Chanel flap bags or Hermès Birkins. 

But, with the limited inventory of luxury watches — as a result of the industry’s limited production, made even worse by the pandemic’s impact on the supply chain — as well as the promise of lower price points, many are shopping for secondhand pieces rather than buying them new. “Watch trading has just started to expand,” confirms Elizabeth Layne, chief merchandising officer at luxury resale platform Rebag, adding that, like handbags, shoppers are increasingly looking at watches “as an investment piece.”

It makes sense: Even on the resale market, luxury pieces can sell for six figures. Then, there’s the value retention factor, which determines how much money consumers could make from selling a piece in the future, should they change their mind (or just want to make some cash).

With all this in mind, here’s what you should keep in mind when shopping for a designer timepiece, secondhand or new.

What Style Of Luxury Watch Do You Want?

Layne says shoppers should first decide whether they want a “fashion watch” or a timepiece: “Fashion watches tend to be more seasonal, while timepieces are more classic.” The former may include watches from luxury, fashion-forward brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Bulgari, and may feature more interesting design details and double as jewelry. “We’re seeing our watch customers get creative with accessorizing their [watch] models,” says Steffi Lee, editorial manager of fine jewelry and watches at The RealReal. “They are choosing delicate styles to pair with vintage rings and bracelets for a stylistically unique look.” 

Although fashion watches come at lower price points (by luxury standards that is), Layne says their trendy elements and jewelry-like design reduce their life span, versus classic timepieces from brands that specialize solely in timepieces.

While it all comes down to personal preference and budget, Layne suggests investing in timepieces from brands like Cartier, Rolex, and Philippe Patek that retain more value. “It’s better to invest in a Chanel or Hermès bag than a watch [from these brands],” says Layne.

What Luxury Watch Brands Should You Invest In?

Right now, the secondhand luxury market — both in demand and resale value — is dominated by Rolex, a brand that, according to the Rebag 2021 Clair report, holds 82% of its value. “Some models within Rolex actually resell for two times the original value, so you’ll be making money,” she says.

While most Rolex watches in the secondhand market sell well, Layne says there are four models that do best: the Batman, the Daytona, the Submariner, and the Coke. According to Rebag’s data, the Rolex Batman — which was discontinued in 2019 — holds an average value of 180% in the secondary market. Meanwhile, the Daytona — named after the Daytona International Speedway in Florida — and the Submariner — known for its appearances in the James Bond franchise — retain an average of 170% and 160% of their original value, respectively. Lastly, the Rolex Coke model — known for its black and red colorway — holds 120% of its value.

According to Brynn Wallner, founder of the popular watch blog Dimepiece, Cartier is another popular luxury watch for buyers right now. “It’s such an iconic brand,” she says, referring to the jeweler’s 175-year history. “Within the watch community, it’s also been revered to high esteem.” While Rolex watches are attractive for their resale value, timepieces by Cartier are more versatile. “The value is really in the fact that you’ll probably wear it every day,” says Wallner. 

According to Rebag’s 2021 Clair Report, the average value retention for Cartier pieces is 62%, with models like the Cartier Tank Française — first introduced in 1996, modeled after the classic Tank  — holding nearly 70% of their value. On the luxury consignment site The RealReal, the resale value of the Panthère de Cartier — first introduced in 1914 — is up by 60% year-over-year. Lee also points to the Cartier Ronde Solo — which features a round shape — as “a great example of a universal watch, adaptable to a more masculine or feminine aesthetic depending on how it’s styled.”

How Much Does A Luxury Watch Cost?

The price of a watch varies vastly and depends on whether you’re looking for a seasonal addition to your 2022 wardrobe or a lifelong timepiece. While fashion watches come with “lower” prices — an Hermès watch can sell for $1,000 to $3,000 — they are harder and less lucrative to sell in the long run. A Rolex in the secondhand market currently sells for as low as $1,600 but can go up to $144,000, depending on the model and material, according to the watch search engine WatchCharts. But while the cost may be higher for the top-tier watch brands, they normally sell for twice their original value in the secondhand market, according to Layne. If an investment piece is what a buyer is after, she says that looking for discontinued models, especially for brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Philippe Patek, and Richard Mille, is a wise long-term goal because of the higher demand for them. 

For many first-time shoppers who are looking to splurge, Cartier is a good starting point because of the brand’s mid-level pricing but good retention value. “They’re not super rare watches, so you can find an abundance of them on the secondary market and you can find a pretty good price,” says Wallner. On The RealReal, for example, the cheapest available Cartier Tank Française is selling for $1,995, while, on Rebag, it’s going for $2,365. (Its estimated retail value ranges between $3,200 and $3,500.) Wallner says this price range is typical for a first-time watch investment, depending on the quality and rarity of the model.

Still, even a thousand-dollar watch is out of reach of many. Wallner says there are still good investment opportunities to be found with lower budgets. “You can get a cool vintage Seiko that costs $300 on eBay,” she says. Wallner also suggests going with direct-to-consumer brands, instead of big names, that offer quality watches below $500, including Daniel Wellington and Breda. It’s also a good starting point for those who are interested in watches but don’t wear timepieces on a regular basis. “If you [previously] never wore watches, it’s nice to start with a watch that’s not as expensive just to make sure you like the feel of it on your wrist,” she says.

What Else To Keep In Mind When Shopping For A Luxury Watch?

There are other influencing factors to consider beyond the brand and model, like authenticity. Lee recommends asking for evidence of the authentication process before buying a four-figure watch from a secondhand seller, as well as performing a thorough evaluation of the item’s condition in person and reading over any mentions of services or repairs. “While servicing a piece is vital to its longevity, it’s also important to remember that every polish and cleaning will wear down the natural material,” she says. Furthermore, she recommends going for pieces that come with a box, technical paperwork, or certificate of authenticity, which all help with resale value.

Wallner’s biggest tip for first-time watch buyers is to keep an eye on the prize. “If you want a Cartier, save up for a Cartier, and don’t spend less money on some other watch you don’t love,” she says. “When you do get that watch [you want], it really feels so special.”

For a while now, a certain shade of green (named after a brand that rhymes with “vendetta”) has dominated fashion trends. But the memo coming from Copenhagen Fashion Week Fall 2022 runways makes clear that green is going to get brighter and blindingly bold come September. 

Over the past few days, Scandinavian designers have showcased neon green in their collections, offering versions that would work equally well at a Friday night rave and Saturday morning brunch. Take, for example, cult Danish brand Ganni, which showed prairie-ready dresses and monochrome suits in muted palettes, worn over lime sweaters. 

Then, there were the club-ready looks shown by Saks Potts. The brand opened the show with two neon outfits: a green maxi sheer dress with a halter neckline and a sheer top, paired with leather black pants. Designed by Barbara Potts and Cathrine Saks, the brand also made the case for sporting the color in a more subdued way, in the form of a green flower belt that was paired with a beige-and-brown outfit. 

But it was Stine Goya that bet on the electric hue becoming next fall’s biggest color trend. Throughout the collection, the label showcased solid coats, dresses, tops, and bags in neon green, as well as colorblocked pieces that featured equally vibrant shades of purple and orange. 

The signs for the highlighter-bright takeover have been here for quite some time. With the rise of retro futurism, a trend that drives inspiration from the 1960s obsession with space and tech, neon colors, as well as metallic textures, have made their way onto the runways for the past few seasons. For spring 2022, for example, New York-based LaPointe showed neon green blazers and leather harnesses inside a club-like setting in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Even Bottega Veneta reimagined its now-signature color for spring 2022: The house’s latest collection included knitted dresses, two-piece sets, rubber boots, and shoulder bags in a juicy hue that was more key lime green than emerald.

It’s often said that a good styling trick is to go with neutrals, a category mostly reserved for black, brown, white, and navy blue. But, according to Copenhagen Fashion Week street style, neon is a must-have for every wardrobe. 

This week, as insiders descended upon the Danish capital for its biannual fashion showcase, there was no shortage of color. Decked in their best color combinations, attendees proved that mixing neon pink with bright orange or denim with a hint of neon green is always a good idea. It’s just the latest piece of evidence that the bold colorblocking trend from the 2010s — and previously, the ‘80s — is making its comeback. This time, it’s  neon-sign bright.
