My two favorite fabrics for spring and summer are linen and cotton. Lightweight, breathable, soft, comfortable and essential in the warm and humid southern climate.  I have always loved cotton styles, never really caring if one is slightly sheerer than another (I simply wear nude colored under garments). Cottons pieces come in so many different types: the all classic basic, cotton with add stretch, textured crinkled, sheer muslin, crisp poplin, puckered seersucker, soft chambray, and more. I have an assortment of all of the above in dresses,,skirts, tops, blouses, pants, skirts and more. In fact, I would say that most of my spring and summer wardrobe is filled with lightweight cotton pieces and I plan to add even more as the weather heats up in the coming months. Anyone with platinum blonde hair will tell you: The color is a commitment. So, if a day of double-process dyeing at the salon isn’t in the cards for you, a wig is an easy way to try out the look. Yaya Ogun, the star of Hair Me Out’s latest episode, opted for a platinum blonde wig to change up her style without spending hours in the chair with foils on her head.

“I’ve never done real color before,” Ogun says, explaining that she’s only ever experimented with shades of brown. Bright blonde was a far cry from what she’s used to, but it didn’t stop her from taking the plunge. Millicent Reid, a wig expert based in Los Angeles, helped Ogun with her transformation, installing an icy blonde wig (think Saweetie) on her client. To start, she braided Ogun’s hair down into straight-back cornrows. “I used the hot comb because I want the braids to lay very flat,” Reid explains.

Once Ogun’s hair was braided down, Reid used makeup on the wig’s lace to help it blend into her client’s complexion, then secured it using Bold Hold Glue. “This is an adhesive glue that is going to stick the lace to her skin,” Reid explains. To ensure a safe hold, Reid bonded the glue to Ogun’s skin using a blowdryer. After the wig installation was complete, Reid styled Ogun’s baby hairs and created soft curls. “This is probably the biggest physical change I’ve ever done,” Ogun says. “It’s boosted my confidence. Only twice a year – the Sephora Spring Savings Event is happening right now.  Below, I’m sharing my tried and true skincare products for healthy glassy skin!

Now, let’s get to the good part!  Personally, I’m not a beauty junkie.  Meaning, I don’t collect beauty products and seeing a lot of products on my vanity makes me anxious.  With that being said, I tend to research heavily, talk to my dermatologist regularly, and then commit to trying out skincare products.  I don’t have a 40-step skincare routine.  As seen below, I have a max of 5 steps, all with purpose.

Morning and Night Routine

Above is a summary of my AM and PM routine and below is a step-by-step application order.  Not to make things more difficult, but the step-by-step instructions below also depend on if the products are water or oil based.  I always apply water-based products first and oil-based products last (the oil is the final step to create a barrier to prevent moisture loss).

My AM routine consists of a gentle cleansing with Tatcha Rice Wash Cleanser (it smells amazing too!), followed by a rotation of actives by switching from the Paula’s Choice BHA and Biossance Vit C every other day (applying it together can cause irritation), then a cushiony cream Belif Moisturizer, ending with Saint Jane Face Oil.

My PM routine is made up of the same cleanser or a gentle exfoliator with Dermalogica Daily Exfoliator (it leaves skin super smooth and polished!), followed by my favorite skin combo Paula’s Choice Niacinamide 20% Treatment and 1% Retinol Treatment, ending with the same moisturizer and face oil.

Best of Actives

Active ingredients are targeted ingredients to address skin concerns.  They are studied and scientifically backed, and most active ingredients are combined to maximize their efficacy.  Vitamin C, niacinamide (also known as vitamin B3), retinol (which is a potent derivative of vitamin A), BHA (such as salicylic acid) are all actives.  Incorporating them into our skincare routine is crucial and important (be careful not to combine too many actives at once because they can cause irritation).

Vitamin C

Vitamin C fights against UV-induced photodamage by absorbing free radicals and protecting our skin.  When applied to the skin, Vit C can encourage new collagen to grow.  It can also help maintain the collagen that we already have and protect these protein from damage.  Two of my favorite Vitamin C serums are Paula’s Choice 15% Vit C serum and Biossance 10% Vit C serum.  I find that the Biossance one is very gentle and the Paula’s Choice is more potent.

Niacinamide + Retinol

An effective active combination is niacinamide + retinol.  I love this combo!  Niacinamide helps visibly minimize enlarged pores, improve uneven skin tone, soften fine lines and wrinkles, and diminish dullness, while retinol is a powerhouse ingredient to combat signs of aging (see below for list of benefits).  My favorites are Paula’s Choice Niacinamide 20% Treatment + 1% Retinol Treatment.  Together, they help achieve healthy glassy skin!  With retinol in general, start slow and monitor any irritation that might occur.

 

In addition to my main skincare products, I also love companion products like sheet and face masks.  When my skin needs a boost of hydration or to soothe irritation, I rely on the SK-II sheet masks and Dr. Barbara Sturm face mask.

I pay attention to my skincare products closely, because I love tracking the results.  In the video above, I took it right when I woke up, no makeup, and still have my night bite guard on.  As you can see, I’m still treating my post-popping zit habit and dark spots.  Overall, it took me months to get here where my skin texture is slowly becoming more tight and smooth, dark spots fading, and loving my bare skin without makeup.

The Takeaway

Talking to my dermatologist over the years, I’ve learned the value of actives (retinol, retinoids, BHA, Vit C, etc) and it’s a mandatory step in achieving healthy skin and overturning signs of aging.  If I can recommend one product (my dermatologist also agrees) – it’s retinol, the Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol Treatment (if you’re not a Sephora Rouge 20% off or VIB member 15% off, I’d recommend buying it on the Paula’s Choice website because it’s currently 15% off).

Retinol does a host of things – 1) Can clear acne by unclogging pores and prevent further outbreaks from occurring, 2) Reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen, 3) Stimulate skin cell turnover (a sort of “exfoliating” effect) to reveal brighter and more even-toned skin.

With all of these actives, consistency is key!  Start slow and monitor signs of irritation.  With this retinol cream, I started by adding 1 pump to my moisturizer every other day.  Then over three weeks, I was able to increase to 3 pumps all over my face after applying niacinamide.  I’d wait 25 minutes for it to soak in, then apply my moisturizer.  I did experience irritation in the form of redness and peeling.  I backed off and slowly reintroduce it again.  After a few weeks, my skin got the hang of it and responded extremely well!

The Paula’s Choice retinol cream is basically an over-the-counter option to prescription strength retinol, thus it’s more gentle and a great way to introduce your skin to retinols.  I look forward to using it every night, because I can visibly see results!

This morning, a statement was released announcing the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. The 99-year-old royal left behind a thorny legacy — but, we’re here to talk about Sprite.

McDonald’s Sprite is a storied meme, one so successful the two words have become building blocks for countless others. According to Know Your Meme, McDonald’s Sprite was first meme-ified in 2017 when a member of Brockhampton simply tweeted “mcdonald’s sprite taste different” [sic]. It’s been a running joke on the internet ever since, popping up whenever the mention seems just right — like today.

While the earliest memes focused on McDonald’s Sprite tasting “different,” later iterations quickly became more specific. McDonald’s Sprite tastes electronic; it tastes stronger than liquor; it tastes — and this may be the one adjective that tops them all — spicy. Like most memes, this one’s endurance seems to be rooted in its truth: McDonald’s Sprite does taste different.

I say that with confidence. The closest McDonald’s to me is minutes away, and I’m typing this story with a can of Sprite and a small-sized McDonald’s Sprite sitting on either side of my work laptop. To my left, McDonald’s Sprite. Upon tasting it, it’s immediately obvious why the internet uses words like “electronic” and “spicy” to describe the flavor. At first sip, you think, Why is it spicy? After a few Kombucha-girl takes, it settles into your mouth in 72p. It’s undeniable: McDonald’s Sprite tastes like it would pair well with Sophie’s “Ponyboy.” Next, after a brief break to cleanse my tastebuds, I sample Sprite from a can and nod my head in affirmation: This is definitely fruity, the lemon-lime fully caught in 4K, the bubbles posing no threat of electrocution.

Fountain sodas always taste different from their canned or bottled counterparts. The restaurants themselves provide the water and add in the syrup manually, playing with variables like water filtration and temperature to create a semi-signature product. Then there are the fountain spouts, which any fast-food employee will tell you are known to be well-seasoned over the years.

The joy around McDonald’s Sprite memes — even those created in the context of whether the fountain soda had the power to harm a near-centenarian royal — has never fully gone away; people were making TikToks about it just a few days ago. But today’s day-long laughing fit is an example of how the kind of twisted dark humor that was once relegated to 4chan and Reddit has officially entered the mainstream. This is, perhaps, a result of our pandemic-induced super-onlineness and general divestment from traditional institutions and values. 

Before, shitposting on the day of a public figure’s death happened in relatively closed communities. Now, people online seem to approach things with more nuance — yes, someone died, but that doesn’t mean they’re beyond criticism. And while some people surely find it distasteful, even disrespectful, to see people swapping morbid Sprite memes on the same day Prince Philip died, we can’t forget that the internet is only a portion of real life; what’s normal online isn’t always normal in real life. Cruel jokes and dark humor have a time and a place — and it might just be online.
