Dogfishing Is the New Online Dating Trend You Need to Know

We all know about catfishing: the practice of taking an extremely flattering photo which may not accurately reflect who you are or is a whole different person. Now there’s a new (slightly deceptive) trend you should know about — dogfishing.

All women love dogs, right? Well, maybe not all women, but a solid majority. And with those odds in hand, modern men using dating apps to meet a hot date are increasingly leveraging someone else’s best friend in order to get them to first base.

According to a 2015 study, women were more likely to be attracted to men who had pets and were twice as likely to judge them on how they react to animals. Enter dogfishing — the new practice of using random pictures of dogs in your profile. While it isn’t quite as deceptive as using a completely different person’s picture, it can still be a bit disappointing when you find out your potential match used someone else’s dog to bait you.

So while we all love us some dog pics, most people agree that if you're going to put a cute-as-hell pup on your dating profile, make sure it’s actually your fur buddy. Don't borrow a friend's dog, or even worse, place a picture of a random pooch on your profile in order to entice the soft-hearted to swipe right.

While this may seem like the ultimate wingman move to make, it's actually not good practice for the fellas borrowing their friend's furry friends. Washington area dating coach Erika Ettin told The Washington Post that would-be Romeos and Casanovas should avoid the practice entirely, as it comes off as a fake pose and can be a huge red flag.

“That’s the main thing: Stop borrowing dogs,” Ettin said. “It’s just odd when you’re using someone else’s dog online, and it seems like you’re trying too hard.”

So, don’t go dogfishing if you're looking to get past the first date. Once your date discovers the doggone truth about your nonexistent pet, there’s a good chance they’ll send you packing, tail between your legs. And, if you’re really a dog lover—get your own.
