This Chatbot Can Help You Practice Breaking Up

Love hurts and finding the right way to end a relationship can be just as difficult for the person doing the dumping as it is for the person being dumped. However, courtesy of technology, we can now practice breaking up with a chatbot before we actually jump in.

A chatbot from Quartz promises to help take the sting out of doing the nasty job of breaking it off, with input from several sex and relationship experts fueling the algorithm behind it. In an interactive game of sorts, the chatbot provides several different examples of stereotypical “bad date” scenarios and asks you to resolve them.

Will you lead them on into believing that sparks actually did fly, or will you simply and curtly inform your date that the magic didn't happen? Playing out like some sort of exciting “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, the chatbot is intuitive to use and actually fun to mess around with even if you aren’t trying to get out of a bad romance.

Presenting people with virtual breakup scenarios can allow them to practice how to be firm when they need to be, and how to be kind when the situation calls for it. Above all, it helps to avoid ghosting, which should only be used as a last result, according to relationship psychologist Jennifer Rhodes.

“If you want to do the right thing, just be clear that you’re not interested ... That whole fear of saying the wrong thing is not helpful to other people,” Rhodes told Quartz.

While it may seem counterintuitive or strange to practice your breakup speech with a long line of imaginary people, the experts seem to agree that it can be beneficial for you — and the dumpee — in the long run. So roll up your sleeves and get your texting fingers ready, and try not to hurt the bot's feelings too badly, okay?
