The Most Popular Beard Style by State

As Labor Day barrels toward us and summer comes to its unofficial end, there is undoubtedly one question on many men's minds this time of year: to beard or not to beard?

The sweltering temperatures and risk of awkward tan lines can make facial hair an unappealing choice in the summer months, but cooler weather just begs for some all-natural facial insulation. That's why the folks at The Black Tux have so graciously rounded up the top beard style in every state to help you get inspired this upcoming Beard Season.

In their pursuit of the facially hirsute, The Black Tux tapped into Google Trends search data to uncover which beard style is most searched in each state. From your standard goatees and full beards to chin straps and questionably Hitler-esque "toothbrush" mustaches, they came to some pretty interesting conclusions.

As expected, men in cold-weather states like Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Michigan are big fans of rocking a full beard to help keep their faces warm. However, North Dakotan men surprisingly prefer to rock just a little bit of stubble despite their state's frigid winters. Full beards are apparently not just for warmth, however, as North Carolina and Louisiana prefer the style as well — something that The Black Tux surmises might have to do with the popularity of the show "Duck Dynasty."

They also uncovered an interesting correlation between states that begin with the letter "A." Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, and Alaska all agree that the goatee is their facial hair of choice despite being located on opposite ends of the country. The "A" states are not alone in their love for the goatee, though. When analyzed by region, the style comes out #1 in the Northeast, the Midwest, and the South. The only region to stray away from this goatee-love is the West where men prefer a good ol' mustache.

Winning over a whopping 15 states, it should be no surprise then that the goatee was dubbed the overall favorite in the nation. The mustache came in second with 10 states, while the full beard came in third, topping the charts in five states.

But remember: just because a particular style is most popular in your state or region does not mean you need to jump on that bandwagon. Want to rock a handlebar in California, land of the chin curtain? Go for it. Mutton chops in soul patch-loving Nebraska? You do you. The Black Tux reminds us that whichever style makes you feel most comfortable and confident is most likely the style that will have you looking your best — even if it means bucking the trend.

Although maybe stay away from that "toothbrush" mustache ... sorry, Minnesota.
