Jenna Johnson Was 'Scared' to Not Have Makeup on in Front of Husband Val Chmerkovskiy When They Were Dating

Jenna Johnson has shared the same piece of advice with each of the four partners she’s worked with on “Dancing With the Stars” thus far: “Keep breathing.”

“Everyone gets super nervous when the live show happens, especially when you have to dance,” she says. “Please don't forget to breathe because A) you'll die, and B) at the end of the day, people just want to see you have fun. Obviously, try your best to remember your steps, but if you mess up, no one is going to care if you have a big smile on your face.”

Which, if you think about it, is a great rule to apply when dating, too. Just keep breathing, have fun and don’t forget to smile, right? Luckily for Johnson, the days of aggressively swiping on dating apps are a thing of the past, tying the knot with fellow “Dancing with the Stars” ballroom-dance professional Valentin Chmerkovskiy back in April.

“If I had to date right now, ever again I would probably punch myself,” she jokes. “Marriage is way better, I love it.” But while she’s off the market, the Provo native still has some advice for all those out there on their quest to find that good lovin’.

AskMen spoke with Johnson about the best qualities a man should have, looking her sexiest in no makeup and why pulling a chair out for a girl is so classy.

AskMen: These days, what are some qualities you believe are essential in a man? How should he behave if he wants to catch a girl’s attention without coming off creepy?

Jenna Johnson: I get so uncomfortable when guys make serious eye contact and don't stop staring, or are really aggressive at first if I don't know them. I think the more respectful and easy you are about things, the better and more comfortable you make a woman feel. Just from the men in my life that I grew up with, I had some really respectful and poised brothers and my father, so I think I'm just attracted to really sophisticated and respectful men.

When you're trying to feel your most empowered and sexiest, what do you do? What is a Jenna thing that you do on your own that is incredibly personal to you?

I feel most empowered and beautiful when I'm in no makeup, fresh faced and I'm sweating. I'm really into fitness and just being active, and I feel like that's something that's kind of empowered me to help me find my confidence and my truth. I'm really passionate about it, and I don't want to say I'm a gym rat, but I love getting my body sweaty. I feel like it's bettering myself, and that's when I feel my best.

What does Val prefer: All dolled up or your natural self?

My husband hates makeup. Well, he doesn't hate it, but he thinks that I am so much more beautiful when I have no makeup on. It's funny, I always look forward to being able to wipe off my makeup and just being fully fresh faced. I feel most beautiful, especially in front of him, and I love that he's made me feel that way. Before, I was scared to not have makeup on in front of him when we were just dating.

Do you like it when a man is chivalrous, or is that too much in 2019? Ladies first is still a thing men should abide by, right?

I guess I'm really old school, but I love when guys pull out a chair for a woman, and then scooch her in … I think it's so cute and classy. I grew up watching my dad open every door for my mom, and my brothers as well, they all did that for me. Another thing, especially out in public, I love when a guy has his arm around his girl … I just love when they feel so passionate or proud to be next to the woman they're with. I think that's so adorable.

If you could name some other women that you think AskMen readers should be following on Instagram right, who would you pick?

I love Sophie Turner, her Instagram is incredible, and I idolize her. I think she is such a talented artist, and when she does these funny Instagram stories of her getting the tea and drinking tea, I just die for it. I'm also pretty obsessed with Priyanka Chopra, I think that she is the definition of a strong, fashionable, intelligent woman.

You have a super strong social media following, but what are audiences missing out on? What’s something we’d never be able to tell just by looking at your profile?

I have an alter ego named Margaret. She only comes out at the house, and Val loves her. She's basically what I'm going to be when I'm 80 years old. This grandma, she has the hunchback, loves to twerk, make funny faces and dance around the house. I don't think many people get to see Margaret, but when she comes out, she is feisty.

You’re currently crushing it on “Dancing with the Stars,” but what’s next?

I really want to get my foot in the door of being on more television, whether that's in a scripted show, acting or hosting, I really want to start that journey, and I think that “Dancing with the Stars” has taught me so many fundamentals about television in general. I grew up doing multiple performing arts ... I like acting, I like singing, I like being in front of the camera, and I just can't wait to try out so many different things. I'm excited for the future.
