Suede for men – too few guys use it.

It has a bad rep among men. It's either too feminine, too fragile, or too inflexible.

5 Rules To Style Suede & Look Amazing (Men's Fashion Fall Guide)

All of that is bullsh*t. Suede is an amazing material with considerable versatility, and I'll explain why. Gentlemen, here are five ways that you can rock suede.

All the great-looking boots you'll see here are made by Thursday Boots, the paid sponsor of today's article. I've been wearing and loving their boots for over two years – these are quality boots at an affordable price.

They use water-resistant Goodyear welting, leather from Tier 1 USA cattle that develops a beautiful patina with time, and a cork lining that conforms to your foot for comfort. Click here to find your favorite Thursday Boots.

  1. Own The Look.
  2. Take Care Of Your Suede.
  3. Know Your Options.
  4. Matching Your Suede.
  5. Knowing When To Wear It.

1. Own The Look – Suede Is Awesome!

As I said, suede for men isn't as sought after as it should be. It's oftentimes seen as effeminate – something only to be worn by women. However, that's simply not true.

As a man secure in his masculinity, you can use this to your advantage to stand out. Let's get into specifics though; why is suede inherently attractive?

It all has to do with touch; you want to imagine how it feels. Suede adds a layer of complexity and texture to an outfit that is both subtle and tantalizing. Wool and traditional leather, for example, are common enough that there's no aura of mystery to them. Suede invokes that temptation, and – whether you know it or not – that makes you attractive.

2. Protecting Your Suede

Suede suffers a nasty prejudice of somehow being more fragile than traditional leather. Guys, this is false. While suede is more susceptible to marks, it is no more resilient or fragile than regular leather.

Even the marks themselves don't necessarily indicate damage. They can easily be fixed.

In most cases, you can use a toothbrush & vinegar combo, or a simple pencil eraser! For thorough cleaning, I recommend using silicone spray on the entirety of the material no less than once a month. It's important to note that a suede brush differs from regular shoe brushes in that the former uses metal bristles to better get at the material without disturbing the texture.

DO NOT use regular shoe polish or conditioner – this can damage the suede. You can easily tell specialty suede cleaners apart by the hard brush on the top of the bottle – the idea being that you spray and then brush without breaking a sweat.

If none of that works out for you, you can always negate the issue entirely by purchasing the amazing WeatherSafe suede boots over at Thursday Boots. The water rolls right off with no residual markings!

3. Knowing Your Options

Suede for men comes in all shapes and sizes, meaning you can integrate it however you see fit.

Jackets are a great way to get started. There are loads of well-made casual suede jackets that are ripe for the picking. Keep an eye out. If you find one you absolutely love, then go for it!

What about footwear? The possibilities are almost endless. Chukka Boots are a fantastic way to rock a more casual look. They've got a bit of heritage as well, dating back to British army boots used back in World War 2 against the Afrika Korps. You've also got Chelsea Boots for a sleeker, slightly more refined look. Curious? Check out my comparison of both styles.

You can even go for loafers, oxfords, or monk straps.

Belts are even available in suede too!

4. Matching Your Suede

The good news is that you can be pretty creative when it comes to suede – it's wonderfully versatile. In essence, you should match it just like you would other leather.

But you can bend those rules.

You can easily wear these with your other brown leather.

If you decide to get something like, say, the olive Chelsea Boots from Thursday Boots, don't feel the need to buy a matching belt. Instead, check the heel – is it brown? It is black? Use that as your standard and match accordingly. This tiny factor gives you leave to be wild with suede colors!

5. Knowing When To Wear It

Though available in a multitude of colors, suede is most commonly available in good old casual brown. This is appropriate given that it's a fundamentally casual material.

Suede allows you more creative freedom than traditional leather.

That's right, gents – suede is great on nearly all outfits, but be very careful about adding it to a business suit. It's not something that will often mesh well.

Summary – Suede For Men

  1. Own The Look.
  2. Take Care Of Your Suede.
  3. Know Your Options.
  4. Matching Your Suede.
  5. Knowing When To Wear It.

Suede offers a substantial and versatile addition to any man's casual closet. Don't be fooled by stereotypes of it being feminine or fragile. Go out for yourself and make your own opinion. Hopefully, you fall in love with suede as I have.
