Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria commonly carried by ticks, and it affects roughly 300,000 Americans every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When left untreated, it can lead to painful, swollen joints and have a detrimental effect on the body's circulatory and nervous systems. However, it is notoriously difficult to diagnose because the signs and symptoms of Lyme Disease — fever, headache, fatigue, et al. — often mimic those found alongside other conditions.

After Bieber revealed his diagnosis, some Twitter users did not take the news of his ongoing condition seriously. However, his wife Hailey quickly came to his defense:

In his message to his followers, Bieber also revealed that he will share his story as he battles and overcomes his health issues in the upcoming 10-part YouTube Originals docu-series, “Justin Bieber: Seasons”, premiering January 27.

"It's been a rough couple years but [I'm] getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease," Bieber concluded in his Instagram post. "And I will be back and better than ever."
