Steve McQueen's Ford Mustang GT from "Bullitt" Goes Up for Auction

With its coat of dust and rust, you'd be forgiven for looking past this old Ford Mustang, but it just might be the most valuable automobile of its kind.

The 1968 Highland Green Mustang GT — once driven by the legendary Steve McQueen — will go up for auction this Friday, January 10 in Kissimmee, Florida. Offered by Mecum Auctions, the car was featured prominently in the movie "Bullitt" with McQueen behind the wheel for one of the most famous chase scenes in modern American cinema.

Last year, Mecum's Kissimmee auction saw a 1967 Shelby GT500 sell for $2.2 million and it currently stands as the record-holder for highest price paid for a Ford Mustang. The highest price ever paid for a muscle car of any kind, however, is $3.5 million for a 1971 Hemi 'Cuda convertible at a 2014 Mecum auction in Seattle. Both numbers are wildly impressive, but this 1968 Mustang of on-screen fame could wind up netting even more.

It can be tricky to predict a vehicle's final selling price, and a close association with a celebrity usually doesn't translate to a boost in value. However, McQueen wasn't just any celebrity —- he's an icon for fellow car-lovers and racing enthusiasts worldwide. The car also seemingly disappeared for decades, with McQueen hunting it down himself and begging to buy it from the Kiernans, a regular New Jersey family that was using it as their sole, everyday mode of transportation. He even offered to buy the Kiernans a new car just to get back behind the wheel of his old GT, but they refused.

Over time, the family's son, Sean Kiernan, restored the car and it reemerged to the public in 2018 after the new Bullitt edition Mustang was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Sean has since toured the country with the family Mustang and has seen it become the 21st car added to the National Historic Vehicle Register.

Now, he's ready to part ways the legendary vehicle ... and he should be in for quite the sizable check for doing so.
