With our In Good Company series, we give recognition to not-so-tall guys who have made an impact on society and pop culture. Designer Ralph Lauren, who’s 5’6”, has always inspired us with his design eye.

The Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation announced in late March that it will be putting $10 million toward global response efforts to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the largest single donation from any clothing brand as of this article’s publication.

If there’s no Ralph Lauren, there’s no Peter Manning NYC. There’s no J.Crew, Abercrombie, Todd Snyder—just to name a handful of brands rooted in American prep style.

Lauren, a Jew born in the Bronx, created the fantasy of ranch life combined with the romance of the sport of polo. That vision remains with the ethos of his brand today. In the early 1970s his polo shirt, emblazoned with his signature polo player icon, took off. In 1974 Diane Keaton and Woody Allen wore his clothes throughout the film “Annie Hall.” Today his company is an online and retail giant that offers casual and formal clothes for men, women and children.

He has stayed true to his vision and, for the most part, stayed away from fleeting trends that shape fashion. Lauren’s clothing has always been functional, stylish and easy-to-wear, three attributes that guide how we develop clothes at Peter Manning.
