I could go my whole life without seeing the adjective “healthy” describe a bagel. Same goes for “superfood,” “gluten-free,” or, well, any of the descriptors given to Queen St. Bakery’s “Bagels With Benefits.” Much like the rest of its inventory, the pro-transparency online bakery’s new goods are also vegan, non-GMO, nut-free, and comprised of all-natural ingredients — chia, flax, and oat flour, to name a few. Quite frankly, after taking on this review and reading the slew of buzz words, I was more than little hesitant.

Not to make this about me, but bagels are occasionally the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning — sinking my teeth into a fluffy everything bagel with butter, whew. Alas, Queen St. Bakery’s healthy snacks found their way to my doorstep, and soon into my toaster. The Ingredients

These bagels currently come in two flavors: Cinnamon Raisin and Chia & Flax Seed. When I gabbed to another co-worker about these healthy gems, they immediately inquired, “So if it’s not bread…what is it?” I can’t confirm whether or not they fit under the umbrella term of bread, but I can inform you of their ingredient list. Instead of the standard wheat flour, yeast, and gluten, Queen St. Bakery subs in chia, flax, beans, millet, and sorghum. This grants you nine grams of fiber per bage. And, according to the brand, it created “the only bread made with chia as the first ingredient (after water).”

Both flavors of bagels are excellent! They toast great, are filling, and best of all I feel great after eating them!

The Taste

First, the texture. The outside is more reminiscent of a soft Sarah Lee bagel and not the smooth fresh-baked buns you get at a deli. Both bagels could give the crusts of Dave’s Crazy Bread loaf a run for its money. The interior is somewhat bagel-like — it’s comparable to the inside of a raisin bran muffin but could easily be mistaken for wheat bread. The ruggedness of the pastry didn’t turn me off. It felt like the brand was basically admitting “there’s no point in trying to perfectly emulate a classic, gluten-filled bagel,” and I respect that. I also admire the fact the bagels came pre-sliced. After the inspection, I popped them into the toaster, and voila! Two crisp and toasty bagels that looked quite delicious stared back at me.

A sweet, grainy aroma steamed from the two slices, and I truly was excited to take a bite. One quick slather of butter later, and the experience was…good? There’s definitely a sad reality where diet culture forces people to pretend blueberries are dessert and lettuce can replace a burger bun. Once upon a time, I was one of those people, and that version of me would be over the moon to discover these bagels. Surprisingly though, the present me actually enjoyed them enough to clean my plate.

Rather than a lighter, fluffier bagel, the mouthfeel was a bit gummy and dense. The flavor was spot on and had an organic (not artificial) sweetness that harmonized with the earthy grains. The Verdict

Queen St. Bakery’s honest and transparent approach to food completely checks out. Not once does the brand promise customers a dupe to the classic yeasty bagel. Instead, the bakery created its own version of this renowned baked good that is the perfect addition to the pantry of anyone looking to eat more whole grains, fiber, and protein. If a carb enthusiast like myself can look forward to these gluten-free AND vegan snacks in the morning, then they’re truly worth the cash. Duvet covers weirdly cater to all ages. 7-year-old me could care less about the best side sleeper pillow or how firm a mattress is, but a Lightning McQueen themed duvet cover? A necessity. Cut to me a week ago, a young professional decorating my NYC apartment, scouring the web for an adult upgrade to my Etsy daisy-print bed spread. This scavenger hunt, while exhilarating, came with a major downside: high price points. That is, until I stumbled across the high-quality lifestyle brand Quince and its $170 European Linen Duvet Cover Set.

The key word here is “linen.” On average, a light, airy, and all-natural flax duvet cover by itself goes for $100 to $200; throw in the pillowcases and you’re jumping into the $200 to $400 range. A queen size linen set from the home goods powerhouse, Parachute, retails for $374. Why? Per the brand’s informative blog post, harvesting the flax is quite laborious, the finished product is stronger than cotton, feels boho-luxe, and is “ideal for year round use.” So you can understand the Shopping team’s excitement at the discovery of Quince’s under-$200, 4.9-star, 100% woven European flax bedding. Read on to hear about my night with the internet’s most affordable linen duvet cover set, and find out if it reflected that cheap price tag, or felt like a million bucks, below.

What is Quince?

We are equal parts impressed and utterly confused by this retailer’s vast, category-spanning inventory. All it takes is a few clicks on the seriously sophisticated site and boom, your cart is filled to the brim with chic washable silk tees, classy 14K gold hoops, a moisturizer or two, and of course, a lovely duvet cover set. The biggest surprise, however, is Quince’s commitment to producing, “[items] of equal or greater quality than the leading luxury brands at a much lower price.” In fact, the retailer first piqued the Shopping team’s interest because of its $50 — sorry, let us spell that out for emphasis — f-i-f-t-y dollar Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater. Then came the under-$200 duvet cover set, and we were sold.

So, why are Quince’s products so affordable?

Ever heard of cutting out the middle man? That’s the main culprit. When you place your order, instead of going from sourcing agents to warehouses and taking other cost-enhancing detours, Quince’s products go directly from manufacturers to consumers. (In other words, it’s a DTC brand.) For example, the mystifyingly cheap cashmere is crafted with $30 wool, costs $10 to produce, fifty cents to package, and $6 to ship — which leaves us with a grand total of $46.50.

The brand’s sustainability commitments and ethical manufacturing check out as well. According to its site, the majority of Quince’s factories are “mid-sized family-run operations” and the remaining “larger operations” enforce “rigorous ethical standards.” The brand recently nixed all virgin plastic packaging and vows it will be 100% compostable by the end of the year. A selection of Quince’s cotton, linen, and percale products are also 100% organic. We will say, in comparison to other retailers, Quince uses less specifics and less metrics when describing its eco-conscious and ethical-labor efforts. However, the extremely transparent and thorough on-site explanation of its production costs brings a boatload of ethos to the table.

What is Quince’s European Linen Duvet Cover Set?

This easy, breezy, beautiful set could book a Cover Girl commercial if need be. For $170, you get a queen-sized woven 100% European flax, 150-gsm (relatively mid-weight) duvet cover and two standard shams. The set comes in eight earthy, muted colorways and is pre-washed to ensure coziness — Quince mentions that its linen only gets softer over time. (Updates on this are pending.) The cover also features cute bottom buttons for closure and has corner ties to keep finicky comforters in place. Plus, although we hope this isn’t necessary, the retailer offers free returns for up to an entire year. 

“Luxurious,” “soft-yet-sturdy,” and “superb” are just a few of the words customers used to describe their sets. On-site reviewer Kevin H., raves how “nice, weighted, [and] cool,” his new covers are and enjoys the “linen on both sides,” aspect. Another happy customer, Brandi W., makes a case for the ever-evolving plushness claim: “I bought the sheet set first and fell in love. The linen gets softer and softer after each wash.” In terms of appearance, reviewer Lisa D. Lives for the “farmhouse vibe,” and “[loves] the color and texture,” of her terracotta-hued duvet. And, after taking a peak at the pictures she provided, we can attest to Lisa’s good taste.

What does Quince’s European Linen Duvet Cover Set feel like?

To me, this bedding is in no way your traditional cozy teddy bear, fuzzy blanket soft. But, I think that’s why I’m infatuated with it. It’s crisp, smooth, and authentic. Plus, upon opening, it smells like when you step into into one of my favorite safe spaces: Cost Plus World Market. If you’ve robbed yourself of experiencing the comforting, earthy, organic, newly-lit candle scent of a World Market, then just know the duvet has a lovely, natural, and fresh laundry-like aroma.

Hence, why I immediately slid it over my comforter, got under the covers, and buried my face in the cushy linen pillowcase like one of those Downy commercials. I blame it on the breathability. Confession: I’m laying beneath it right now and the fabric just somehow doesn’t get hot like my old cotton duvet. This isn’t to say it is not cozy — in fact, I’m a somewhat rare, heated-blanket-on-high, always-cold kind of sleeper and I slept like a perfectly temperate baby these past two nights. Final answer: fresh out of the bag, it’s not “soft” per se — it’s smooth, comforting, and I have to repeat the most accurate word, crisp.

So, what’s the verdict?

The Quince European Linen Duvet Cover Set gets my and my dear plushie Cheesecake’s stamp of approval. My bed looks dressed to the nines and finally got the mature upgrade it deserves (keeping my stuffed animals ’til I die) — and my face is obsessed with those infinitely chill linen pillowcases. Funny enough, many of the on-site reviews came from parents who purchased sets for their teen and college-aged kids, so perhaps its the ultimate introduction to fancier bedding for up and coming youth. But, just like we said in the beginning, duvet covers appeal to all ages — so, whether you’re navigating your (insanely expensive) mid-twenties like myself, going to university, or are an affordable linen bedding buff of any age, Quince’s linen duvet cover set is the way to go.

About five years ago — after flipping through some dusty photo albums in my Southern California childhood home and unearthing a polaroid from the 90s — I discovered that I did not get it from my mama. Instead, I got my narrow hips, short torso, long legs, and broad shoulders directly from my father. So, I’m choking back a laugh seeing us both stunt in matching best-selling joggers from the SoCal-centric, extremely hang-loose-y performance apparel brand, Vuori.

Let’s just say, if you were to dunk a certain super citrusy Canadian activewear brand in Malibu’s Pacific Ocean; give it a beachy spray tan; and hand it a post-Runyon-Canyon-hike green juice, you’d get Vuori. We came across the sunshine-y, eco-conscious clothing retailer because of its substantially male cult following – our affiliate director’s very own fiancé is obsessed with his multiple pairs of Sunday Performance Joggers. So, naturally, we had to put the retailer’s top-reviewed women’s Performance Joggers to the test and…let my dad in on the fun. Below, read this seriously-SoCal father daughter duo’s honest review of these west coast sweats and find out if we’ll sport them on our next trip to In N’ Out.

Vuori Performance Joggers, $84 – $89

Vuori’s site is an athletic beach babe’s fever dream. Although, you don’t have to be a SoCal native like myself (did I already mention that by the way?) to enjoy the brand’s “new perspective on performance apparel.” In fact, its mystifyingly soft DreamKnit™ joggers, luxurious no-slip leggings, lightweight hoodies, and more on-site best-sellers were not necessarily made for perusing Malibu’s sandy shores — they’re simply inspired by “the active Coastal California lifestyle.”

Southern Californians can get a little one-track-Santa-Monica minded when it comes to our side of the state, so you may wonder, “what the hell is an active Coastal California lifestyle?” Essentially, those relaxed fits, supple recycled eco-friendly fabrics, subdued colorways, and stylishly simple designs emulate happy-go-lucky, laid-back, and casual Pacific Coast Highway culture. But, laid-back doesn’t mean lazy. Vuori offsets 100% of its carbon footprint, actively enforces ethical manufacturing, and engages in its community through free online workout classes on its ACTV Club on the daily.

For such quality, sustainable, and thoughtfully-made products, the Performance Jogger’s $84 to $89 price point is understandable. Plus, 15,089 reviews and a 4.9 out of 5-star rating (that’s 13,899 sparkly 5-star testimonies) are enough to justify any kind of splurge. Verified Vuori buyer, Emily C., wants a pair “in every color,” while 5′ 10″ verified buyer, E M., raves about the “not tight, but just fitted enough to be comfortable and not baggy” feel of the pant. We can’t pass over my personal favorite part: the feel. Reviewer Nina R. put it perfectly: “The fabric is SUPER comfy, so soft to the touch and substantial but also lightweight.” Let’s see how they handled my dad and I’s long legs.

How athletic and “coastal California” is your lifestyle?

My fellow Shopping team members asked me to review this brand for a reason: my entire life growing up in Ventura County, CA truly revolved around sports and Zuma Beach. I’m a little embarrassed at how stereotypical it was. Back then it was volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, etc. — now, I live in Brooklyn and go to the gym when I can.

How is the fit?

Quite frankly, I prefer my sweats baggy, long, and cozy. But, my legs did take a liking to the cropped, slender yet loose fit of these pants. I mean, they’re called joggers for a reason — and that bottom elastic cuff clung to my ankle very nicely. The cling is essential because too many a jogger has hiked up to my shins after a few steps. These did not. And, the waist! I love the waist band so much — it doesn’t constrict, but hugs and creates a cute ruffle effect around my stomach without embossing my skin with drawstring marks.

How is the feel?

Everyone, please give me your undivided attention: the silkiness and airiness of the DreamKnit™ fabric needs to be studied. I mention this, because in my hand the joggers are soft, but nothing I’ve never felt before. But when I put them on? How do I say that the recycled polyester fabric feels like a Build-A-Bear’s heart, the smooth white rubber toe-tip of a fresh pair of Converse, and a waterfall of cotton candy combined without sounding dramatic?

On a more concrete note: the joggers are thin, but not see through and optimal for movement, but not necessarily exercise. They’re also wonderfully stretchy and I wear them with no fear of ripping or snagging.

Where would you wear these?

I would definitely wear them on a hike, to the store, or the post office. They are perfect for those inbetweener exercise activities like going for a walk, a quick bike ride, or maybe even a yoga class. You’ll also find me sleeping in them and wearing them around my apartment 24/7. I recommend!

How athletic and “coastal California” is your lifestyle?

Well, I was born and raised in Oakland, CA and didn’t move to Southern California until the early 90s. I’m very athletic and go to the gym six out of the seven days of the week and you’ll mostly find me in activewear everyday. I’m not the most laid-back Southern California person, probably because I come from the Bay (shoutout to my high school alma mater McClymonds!) but I do rep California as a whole.

How is the fit?

They looked small but they fit well and they adjust to your body when you put them on. They also went to my ankles, which I appreciate. The drawstring is nice for customization and is comfortable when tied.

How is the feel?

They felt very soft, sleek, and comfortable. Color was a nice, good neutral that goes with many things in my wardrobe. In comparison to Nike and Adidas, these are more contemporary and they feels more breathable because the fabric is not your typical nylon. Plus, you have the elastic around your ankle — whereas most sweatpants are straight legged. 

Author’s note: My mom also got a feel of the joggers and noted, “They may be recycled polyester, but they have the feel of a natural fiber or organic material.”

Where would you wear these?

Because I sweat so much at the gym, I wouldn’t wear these joggers. But, I would wear them on a hike, or a nice walk, or a leisurely trip to the grocery store. I would recommend them to someone who wants a stylish fit for outdoor or indoor occasions as opposed to full-fledged exercise.

As an avid Instagram scroller, devout Rico Nasty stan, and secret admirer of early 2010s’ emo Myspace culture, it was only a matter of time before a pair of chunky, delightfully cartoonish Moon Boots entered my orbit. Interestingly enough, when one exits the fashion-sphere, these (inter)stellar kicks, aka controlled ankle motion boots, can be found stabilizing ankle injuries around the globe. However, when placed atop Dua Lipa‘s feet, complementing the aforementioned Rico Nasty‘s OOTDs, or spotted at New York Fashion Week, we refer to them as the trendiest footwear of the early 2020s.

So I, your average Earth dweller, thought it best to try some on for size — and more specifically, see if I can manage to walk the walk in them for a month around New York City. Below, learn all about the vast Moon Boots universe, see the three different ways I styled my own pair of Icons, and prepare for blast off in three, two, one.

Wait a minute, what are Moon Boots?

My social circle was actually surprised to find out Moon Boots were not just a style of shoe, but a legitimate brand started by Giancarlo Zanatta back in 1969 (ahem, the same year Apollo 11 successfully landed on the great gibbous). Despite the retailer’s early start, we noticed the footwear picking up traction on social media last year and continuing into 2022. You, yourself, can find them with limited availability on sites like SSENSE, Saks Fifth Ave, Farfetch, and even Zappos. However, if you want a full pick of the litter, moonboot.com is your best bet.

When I see a Moon Boot, I imagine Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit, an UGG boot, and some wellies having a comfy ménage à trois — but in actuality, per Moon Boot’s site, they are $140 to $300 expertly-crafted snow boots that “riff on high technology astronaut wear.” If you find yourself in Tundra-esque climates often, then you’re in luck. The retailer’s most recognizable pairs, the Icon & Icon Lows, are insulated, 100% water-repellant, equipped with suction pads on their rubber tread soles, and can be worn on either feet. They also come in a myriad of colorways and were meant to easily slide on and off your toes (if you’re in between any of the size ranges, make sure to go up one rather than down). I personally can attest to how lightweight my Icons are and how those rubber soles maintain an impressive amount of traction throughout slushy NYC streets.   

Look #1: Astronaut Off-Duty

Which brings us to my first look that I like to call astronaut off-duty. I’ll be honest, after wearing my boots exclusively around my apartment in pajamas, when it was time to style them for the concrete jungle, I panicked. It was a sunny but 45 degree Saturday in NYC — meaning shivering in the shadows but perspiring in a jacket under the sun — and my friend and I had shopping in SoHo confirmed on the docket. So, I emulated celebrities’ denim-free looks and opted for a pair of discontinued American Apparel joggers, a cream Zara turtleneck sweater, the Shopping team’s favorite Free People puffer jacket, and a simple black & Other Stories shoulder bag.

Let’s just say, “one small step for man” does not apply to these shoes. Each footprint felt larger than the next once I hit the sidewalk. I’m a US size 9 and went for the EU 39/41 range, which I don’t regret. However, my key to surviving a day’s worth (12,421 steps) in these boots is: Lace. Them. Tight. After I constricted the strings around my ankles, I felt totally comfortable moon-walking throughout the crowded streets of Manhattan. Bonus: a style savvy Aritzia employee stopped me to excitedly ask: “Oh my god, are those moon boots?!”

Look #2: Cosmic Curduroy

This funky light-turquoise Urban Outfitters corduroy puffer jacket might be the top-complimented garment in my closet — and, in my opinion, it creates sweet, sweet harmonies with my cream Icons. Perhaps it’s because both pieces echo snowy, oversized ski slope fashion or both have equally icy undertones, but I loved the way they complemented one another. To not distract from their love affair, I plopped on a pair of plain straight leg black denim jeans (thrifted), a simple black Zara turtleneck, and my prized Gucci bag. I was nervous that my attire would not be well received at the traditional Italian restaurant my friend and I reserved a table at, but upon entering, a waitress chimed, “I love those boots!” and quelled any lingering self-conscious thoughts.

Look #3: Sonic BOOM

For the last look, I wanted to carry-out my pastel, extra-femme fantasy and go loud. Also, by this point, I’d worn my Moon Boots to the grocery store, the cafe, etc., so, I no longer felt odd sporting them like this on a casual Thursday afternoon. I wore my lavender Aritzia knit sweater dress, tried & true UO corduroy puffer jacket, black ribbed tights from who knows where, wrapped it all together with a Behno pastel yellow shoulder bag and of course, an iced oat milk latte.

After one month of wear, the boots are not scuffed, not off-color, or any less comfortable. I think I flaunt them so often now because they are truly cozy and pure fun fashion. And, although they keep my shins warm in the cold, you will see me perusing the streets in my pair with ankle socks, bare legs, and a cute spring-y outfit. Full transparency, they will probably hibernate in my closet during the incoming sweltering hot NYC summer.

By the end of my experiment, my goal was not necessarily to get you, the reader, to buy these galactic booties, but instead debunk why astronaut couture is flooding the streets. My answer?
