I really do believe that we’re in the home stretch of this pandemic!

As I hit the one-year mark on my Covid-19 quarantine {wow, a whole year} this week, I thought it would be a nice time to take a walk down memory lane and share different ways I’m working hard to stay excited to stay home.

1. Start A New Hobby

I’m sure you guys started a new hobby during quarantine to try to keep things feeling fresh. But perhaps some of those new activities have fallen by the wayside. As I am currently working on writing my book, I took the opportunity to order new journals, candles and pens to keep my workspace feeling inspired and creative. 3. Live Presently In The Moment

Lately the COVID fatigue has been hitting really hard. I feel like we’re doing the same thing day in and night out. When it feels like the finish line to something is so close, it’s easy for time to start to crawl by. I’m trying to stay focused on making the most of every single moment by putting my phone away, playing with June and really soaking in this time we have as a family at home.

4. Spoil Yourself

If you told me two years ago that I’d be forced to sit home, be still and try and do “nothing,” I would have made you a list of things I would have looked forward to: reading books, watching movies, cracking open that nice bottle of wine. Somehow, I have blinked and it’s been a year of staying home and I haven’t really done much in terms of, well, doing nothing! Grant and I have been ordering in a lot and binge watching the latest shows, and best of all, we’ve been able to earn rewards on our at-home dinner and movie nights! We always earn 4% cash back on dining purchases with my Savor card, and through April 30, 2021 we are earning 4% cash back on select streaming services including Netflix, Hulu and Disney+.  I’m also really trying to soak in my days by reading more, taking more bubble baths and not feeling so guilty about practicing the art of doing nothing!

Not explicitly, but yes. My parents never pushed me to go to college, but it was an unspoken assumption I would. I received my bachelor’s degree and used a mix of work-study jobs, grants, and student loans to finance my education.

None. My parents were bad with money, lived paycheck to paycheck, and did not save for anything. They spent money as they earned it.

What was your first job and why did you get it?
My first real job was as a server at a restaurant. It seemed like an easy enough job and I worked on the weekends for cash tips.

Day One

9 a.m. — Wake up, wash my face, and brush my teeth. Go downstairs, and make some coffee, and get dressed. My partner and I end up going for a quick run and walk around the neighborhood. We look around at all the new luxury home development and dream of owning our home one day (away from the Bay Area).

12 p.m. — Head home and make some late breakfast for lunch — two eggs over easy, turkey bacon, hash browns with pico de gallo, and a slice of sourdough bread. Watch some Netflix and do chores around the house. Later in the afternoon, we head to Trader Joe’s and pick up some light groceries (milk, fruits, veggies). $41.71

6 p.m. — Drive to the local grocery store with my partner to check. We get ramen, veggies, and snacks. I get ready for the week ahead and check on some work emails before bed. $12

Day Two

5:30 a.m. — The alarm wakes me up — time for work. I make my daily coffee to save money and resist buying a coffee from Starbucks (my guilty pleasure). Brush my teeth, wash my face, and get dressed for work.

11 a.m. — Lunchtime. I get very tempted to buy food at lunch but also try very hard to resist by eating my packed lunch. Lunches bought at work can cost up to $17 ($10 on the lower side).

5 p.m. — Time to go home. Make some ramen for dinner and call it a night. I am absolutely exhausted from work and pass out by 10.

Day Three

5:30 a.m. — Repeat of day two. The alarm blares loudly, rousing me from my sleep. I groggily wake up for work and start making my way down to the kitchen to make my coffee. I get ready and pack my lunch downstairs then head into work.

11 a.m. — Lunchtime — my Trader Joe’s turkey, lettuce, and Swiss cheese wrap. I look around sadly at others who purchased their yummy-looking sushi-teriyaki bento box lunches. I then remind myself, “You are saving for a reason. They are throwing $15 away for ONE meal!”

6 p.m. — Stay late to wrap up things at work so that I can early leave tomorrow. It’s a three-day work week, and I’m taking a half-day tomorrow to kick off the Christmas holiday. When I get home, I start packing for my Christmas weekend getaway.

Day Four

6:30 a.m. — I stop by Starbucks on the way to work to treat myself before I kickoff my half-day heading into the Christmas holiday — didn’t make my daily coffee today. Happily sip on my cold brew as I head into work. $4.75

3:30 p.m. — Leave work and go home to pick up the boyfriend (he works from home). We pack the car with our bags and head to the gas station to fill up the tank before we start our drive. $30

9 p.m. — Finally arrive at our hotel in Lake Tahoe; we are absolutely famished after being on the road for four hours (holiday traffic out of the Bay Area). As I look on Google Maps, practically every restaurant in the area for takeout is closed. We decide on Taco Bell after debating on getting Dominos, McDonald’s, or Taco Bell. The burrito bowl and cheesy quesadillas help lull us to sleep in preparation for an early day on the slopes tomorrow. $20

Day Five

8:30 a.m. — We stop by McDonald’s to pick up some breakfast (Big Breakfast, McMuffin, orange juice) before we hit the slopes. Need as much fuel as possible! Skiing and snowboarding are very intense! I also stop by the CVS next door to buy a pair of ski gloves since I lost one of my gloves in Shasta year. I also eye a packet of Oreos and Goldfish on my way to the cash register and grab them too. $46.24

11 a.m. — My ankle and feet are extremely swollen from skiing. I fell halfway down the mountain due to the pain of the ski boot digging into my left ankle and foot. I think it is twisted; my body is in all sorts of pain and is very bruised. We stop by the ski shop and get schooled by a seasoned ski/snowboard expert who sells me a new pair of ski boots at a discount. I also decide to buy proper ski socks. We head back up to the bunny slope and I make more success down the mountain with these new boots. Hurray! $121

6 p.m. — We head back to the hotel and peel the damp clothes from our bodies and dry our boots. I ice the very red and angry bruise on my knee for about 30 minutes. We grab our mango hard seltzers (brought from home) and head to the hot tub to soak our sore muscles. While we soak in the hot tub with our masks on (while the annoying couple in the separated level of the hot tub does NOT follow the mask rules), we decide on Thai food for dinner. I find a place and try to call to place an order. I end up calling like 14 times and they don’t answer. I then switch and call the Nevada location (same restaurant, same distance away from the hotel) of this restaurant and have success at placing an order. We head back up to the room, shower, and go pick up the food. It is mouthwatering, delicious Thai food: drunken noodles with calamari, tom kha soup with shrimp, scallops, mussels, squid, pad thai, and fried crab rangoon. We devour everything. $54.41

Day Six

9 a.m. — We wake up with sore bodies. My bruise is extremely purple and I yelp in pain as my boyfriend tries to massage it. I am able to extend my right knee and walk around slowly with a limp, but it hurts to even lightly graze over the skin. Clearly, I am in no condition to ski today. We end up ordering breakfast from a local diner and eat it in our room. It is delicious and hearty! We pack up our things from the hotel and decide that I will be sitting out from skiing. I do get a refund on my ski pass that I purchased (two days). I hang out for a bit while my boyfriend goes snowboarding. $27.37

12 p.m. — I get bored while I wait for my boyfriend to finish snowboarding. I wander around the ski resort but it is extremely cold and I am shivering. I find the gift shop and start looking for souvenirs to bring back. I end up with t-shirts for everyone in my family and a magnet to bring home. $129.78

5 p.m. — We fill up on gas on the way out of Tahoe and start the long drive back to the Bay Area. We end up getting Popeyes for dinner because it is Christmas, everything else is closed, and we are on the road. I thought my Christmas would be more eventful, but as my boyfriend and I talk and look back on 2020 and what we have been through, we feel very grateful for everything in our lives. The pandemic has devastated the world, crushed so many economies, and deeply affected people’s lives as their loved ones were taken away by the virus. As painful as my stupid little bruise is, I acknowledge that I am very blessed to be where I am and hope for better things to come in 2021 for everyone in the world. $41.90

Day Seven

9 a.m. — I wake up and lay in bed, happy to be back home in my own place. I make coffee downstairs and read some magazines. I throw our clothes from the Tahoe trip into the laundry and make the bed. I make my usual savory breakfast.

1 p.m. — I finish with the laundry. We spend a lazy day at home doing nothing and recovering from the ski trip. My bruise is still dark but I continue to ice it and not bend my leg too much.

7 p.m. — We make some salad and chicken for dinner and tuck in with some Netflix. It’s good to be home post-Christmas and relax.

Yesterday I was minding my business and eating a banana for an afternoon snack, when my husband walked in, immediately gave me a horrified look, and exclaimed, “Why are you eating your banana upside-down?” 

I looked at my banana. It looked very much like it was in the correct position to be eaten. I asked what he meant, wondering if this was some sort of elaborate marital troll. “You’re supposed to peel it from this side,” he said, indicating the stem, motioning that it should have been what was opened first. Meanwhile, I had peeled it from the darkened tip — what some consider the “bottom” of the banana — just like I had done my entire life, because it opens more readily and then you have the stem to hold onto, sort of like with a lollipop or popsicle. Duh. I wasn’t in the mood to be mansplained to. 

“Um, why exactly?” I argued. “The stem side is hard to peel back, and this side practically opens itself, ta-da!” 

“Look at your Chiquita sticker. It is UPSIDE-DOWN!” he countered. 

“SO WHAT? IT’S A STICKER ON A FRUIT!!” I responded, at this point feeling like my world was turning upside-down. We went back-and-forth for a while, and at one point he took a picture of my half-eaten banana, apparently so he could always remember how weirdly I peeled it.

Convinced that my husband had chosen the more laborious banana route for no good reason, I decided to query my coworkers on Slack. “How does everyone peel a banana?” I asked. “Um, there is only one way,” said my editor. Aha. My way. The majority of the team agreed that you open a banana from the “top.” I was satisfied. “Nick, you’re wrong!” I shouted. At this point, he was in a Zoom meeting and disinterested in my banana-peeling. 

“Monkeys do it from the bottom,” suggested our Money Diaries editor. 

However, a couple of dissenters admitted to doing it from the “bottom”:

“I do the bottom now,” said our health editor. “It’s easier, and you have the top to hold onto. When I open a banana from the top, the top gets squished, which I don’t like.” 

“I am a convert now and do it from the bottom,” one of our staff writers agreed. “It is easier, I endorse. Way less messy.” 

At this point, I had become unsure what anyone meant by “top” and “bottom.” And I was becoming increasingly embarrassed to be a grown adult who doesn’t understand the intricacies of banana-peeling.

“Wait, I am still confused which is the top and which is the bottom,” I gingerly typed out. I had already been judged today, I had no fear. My coworkers explained that the part that connects it to other bananas is generally considered the top part.

It finally began to click with me that what I had always thought was the top of the banana is actually the bottom to most people, and that peeling a banana from the bottom is not the usual way. After all, only a couple of others on my team of 10 did it like this, even though it is far easier to open it my way. Although, perhaps by making it about the ease of opening a banana, the real question was about the banana’s degree of ripeness, as my editor suggested? An unripe banana is harder to open, stem-side or not.

Then, things got a bit more complicated. “I’m not trying to throw the balance off, but what we call the top (the part with the sinewy bend) is actually the bottom. And the blackened part is the top. Google bananas growing on trees,” another one of my colleagues suggested.

I did. Thinking about it this way (they grow with the soft, darkened tip up) vindicated that I have always called it the “top.” But it didn’t change the fact that my mind was completely blown by what was apparently the “normal-people” way to peel a banana.

I queried the internet some more. It seemed that despite the fact that most people viewed peeling it from the stem (or “top”) the correct and accepted way, the tides had been turning. People are discovering my way! “You’ve Been Peeling Bananas Wrong Your Whole Life and It’s Time to Stop,” advised an article on Spoon University.  

“Until about a year ago, I spent my entire life peeling bananas from the stem down,” the author wrote. “Believing that this was the right way to peel a banana, I would often find myself wrestling with the dang fruit, only to end up with a half-mushed and bruised banana. After going through all that trouble, I wouldn’t even want to eat my mangled banana. Who would?” 

Yes, who would indeed! It goes against nature!

“The true, correct way to peel a banana is from the bottom up,” the writer went on. “Ignore that misleading stem and turn your banana upside-down.” 

I already do, thank you! And, I will continue to do just that, and peel bananas the way our closest banana-eating relatives, the monkeys, do. After all, they’re the experts. But this journey did make me question things just a bit. Like, how many other things do we do all day that we think are completely normal but are weird to most everyone else? And the longer that many of us remain at home, isolated, the more these habits will become ingrained, with us never having any idea that they’re considered weird to others. (What are yours? Drinking a glass of milk a day, perhaps?) 

“It’s just one of those things you don’t expect to see, especially with someone you know so well,” my husband explained, Wednesday-morning-quarterbacking our banana discussion. “You eat bananas multiple times a week. I just never observed you eating them, apparently.” And now, he can’t unsee it. Maybe it’ll even make him change his ways.

My athleisure wardrobe is limited. Pre-pandemic I usually invested in fashion-forward pieces rather than something to get my sweat on or lounge in. Although I love the thrill of wearing a pair of leather pants, due to the shitake storm that was this past year, prancing around the world in my fiercest ‘fits has been replaced with a more relaxed style. Brands left and right have amped up loungewear to meet the comfort-first movement, with more and more options for us larger folk seemingly popping up overnight. While labels like Girlfriend Collective and Universal Standard were ahead of the inclusive-size curve, brands like Lululemon more recently entered the chat. When Lululemon graciously offered to gift me an assortment of styles from its newly extended range, I felt compelled to give it a try. As a larger woman, it’s difficult finding inclusive places to shop — and, since I could now participate in this new (albeit limited) activewear lineup, I took it as an opportunity to give my honest thoughts on how it really stacks up. Keep scrolling for my full Lululemon review on the styles I ended up loving the most — including details on the fits and feels, if they passed the squat test, and how they look in my selfie shots.

Align High Rise Pant 28″, $98

Out of everything I received, the three pairs of leggings were my favorite pieces (I received a size 20 in each). My out-of-the-box impression of the bestselling Align Pant was that they felt super smooth (this makes sense because Lululemon’s custom Nulu fabric is incredibly soft). As soon as I slipped them on, it honestly felt “buttery” just as the product page describes. The Align Pant passed the squat test with flying colors; they move really well — aka they feel like I’m wearing nothin’ at all. There was some pulling needed to adjust them every so often but it wasn’t too extreme. Although they’re designed with yoga-like activities in mind, for the purposes of this review I just did some walking around, squatting, and a little light stretching — for all of which they definitely held up. These are a pair of leggings I would happily lounge around the house in. They’re soft, breathable, and boast that barely-there feel.

Wunder Train HR Tight 25″, $98

I was drawn to the soothing water drop colorway for the Wunder Train Tight; in-person it resembles a periwinkle-like hue. They’re very uncomplicated and allow you to move easily. The touch-feel is impressive as it’s more compressive yet still super soft — I found myself continually running my hands up my legs. The Wunder Train Tight mostly passes the squat test with minimal adjusting needed upon rising. The style features a drawcord and a lil’ pocket on the inside to hold your keys (an added bonus!). I’m 5’9”, so the 25” length was slightly cropped but nothing too dramatic because my legs aren’t super long. They’re apparently designed to keep you cool but, since it’s winter, I’d be curious to see how these hold up in sticky summer heat. This style is one I will definitely use for everything from strength workouts to long walks. It’s durable while still maintaining a comfy softness.

Invigorate HR Tight 25″, $128

The Invigorate tights stood out because of the deep pockets that flank the sides of each leg. These are definitely ideal for stowing away your phone or any larger items that won’t fit in the small waistband pocket. Lululemon created the Invigorate line for more intense workouts, reinforcing the style with its Everlux fabric that wicks away sweat like “magic.” I didn’t do anything incredibly vigorous, but I did run in place and was able to do some high knees fairly easily in these. The overall fit-feel was more compressive than the Align Pant but didn’t have too many noticeable differences from the Wunder Trains (except for those deep pockets!). These are definitely ideal for outdoor jogs so that I can easily stash my phone, keys, etc. on my person.

Final Thoughts…

Out of the wider assortment I received, the three leggings featured above were my standout favorites due to their high quality and comfortable fit. There were some pieces (like the Enlite Bra, Run Times Bra, and the Beyond the Studio Jogger) that I really wanted to love but they simply ended up being a little too snug. For each of these styles, I tried on the largest size offered which unfortunately left me with no other option. As someone who is usually around a 2X/3X/20W, I recognize my privilege in the plus-fashion space; when a brand does choose to extend sizing, I’m usually included. However, some of my larger peers simply aren’t catered to enough. Lululemon is by no means alone in this — and, although the new extended sizes are a start, large bodies should be catered to at the inception of a brand and not as an afterthought. I genuinely hope to see Lululemon continue to expand its sizing and product offerings in the future.

In an essay published to Medium on Wednesday morning, one of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s former colleagues accused him of sexually harassing his staff and creating a hostile, inappropriate work environment for women. Lindsey Boylan, a former Deputy Secretary for Economic Development and Special Advisor to the Governor, wrote that Cuomo “created a culture within his administration where sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected.” In a statement to Refinery29, Cuomo’s press secretary Caitlin Girouard said, “Ms. Boylan’s claims of inappropriate behavior are quite simply false.”

Boylan joined New York’s state government in 2015. She says she first met Cuomo in 2016, and her boss soon informed her that he had a “crush” on her. In a screenshot published along with the story, Stephanie Benton, the Director of the Governor’s Offices, allegedly told Boylan that Cuomo had likened her to Lisa Shields, his rumored ex-girlfriend. “You could be sisters. Except you’re the better looking sister,” she alleged Cuomo said to her. Boylan says he then began calling her “Lisa” in front of colleagues.

“His inappropriate behavior toward women was an affirmation that he liked you, that you must be doing something right,” she wrote. She added that he went out of his way to touch her “lower back, arms, and legs,” and often made demeaning comments about women in his staff, including remarks about their appearances and jokes about their love lives. After her promotion in 2018, Boylan says Cuomo kissed her on the lips after a one-on-one briefing. She quit shortly thereafter.

Boylan first came forward with her allegations in December, after another former staffer told her that she had also experienced harassment. “Her story mirrored my own,” Boylan said. “Seeing his name floated as a potential candidate for U.S. Attorney General — the highest law enforcement official in the land — set me off.” 

This prompted Boylan to make a Twitter thread accusing Cuomo of harassing her and his staff of staying silent. At the time, Cuomo’s press secretary, Caitlin Girouard, told Refinery29 in a statement, “There is simply no truth to these claims.”

Cuomo is currently facing backlash for misrepresenting the number of New York’s nursing home deaths from COVID-19 by failing to include thousands of nursing home residents who died in hospitals in the state’s official nursing home death toll. But as the story spiraled, Cuomo has also been criticized for threatening, bullying, and blaming his critics, including other New York politicians. Democratic Assemblyman Ron T. Kim claimed that Cuomo called him and threatened to “destroy” him unless he retracted his criticisms of the nursing home controversy.

“When he is enjoying the national spotlight, he wants all the credit, attention and profits that come from his fame. But the moment he is caught engaging in unethical and corrupt behavior, like covering up life-and-death nursing home information, he wants to implicate as many others as possible,” Kim wrote in the New York Daily News. “This is not about a feud between two people, it is about his continuous efforts to implicate other lawmakers with lies and a coverup of his deadly, unilateral policies during this pandemic.” 

In an MSNBC interview, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he “100 percent” believes Kim. “That’s classic Andrew Cuomo. A lot of people in New York State have received those phone calls,” de Blasio said. “I believe Ron Kim and it’s very, very sad.” He added that the “threats, the belittling, the demand that someone change their statement right that moment” is something he has heard “many, many times.”

Boylan has not responded to Refinery29’s request for comment. “I expect the Governor and his top aides will attempt to further disparage me, just as they’ve done with Assemblymember Kim,” Boylan wrote in her essay. “They’d lose their jobs if they didn’t protect him. That’s how his administration works. I know because I was a part of it.”
