Lady Gaga was photographed outside a hotel in Rome today sporting dark brown hair, a total 180 from her signature platinum blonde, which she had several weeks ago at the presidential inauguration. Though the rich brunette shade is in stark contrast to her usual look, it’s actually a return to her (literal) roots — and a possible signifier of an exciting upcoming project for the singer.

Over the last few days, Gaga has been spotted wearing a number of remarkable high-fashion looks, including a full-length leopard-print caftan by Celine. This time, she paired a white suit with seven-inch leather platform boots and her new dark hair in 1940s-style brushed-out curls.

The amped-up style game and dye job could very well be part of the star’s character development for her upcoming role in Ridley Scott’s fashion film Gucci, which also stars Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Adam Driver, reports Harper’s Bazaar. Gaga will portray Maurizio Gucci’s ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating his assassination on the steps of his office in 1995.

This is the first film Gaga has taken on since her now-legendary performance in A Star Is Born in 2018. During and after filming, the performer and fashion chameleon experimented with her own style, channeling her onscreen persona in the process. She could be doing the same now — and if that’s the case, we can hopefully expect countless iconic glam moments from her in Gucci.

Before the 2020-2021 flu season began, experts were warning of an influenza-and-COVID-19 “twindemic” — a viral mash-up that could wreak havoc on the United States healthcare system. The main concern was that we’d see an increase in hospitalizations from the seasonal flu, putting even more of a strain on already overtaxed hospitals. But it appears that those worries may have been unfounded. The flu has all but disappeared this year.

Between October 1, 2020 and January 30, 2021, only 155 people in the United States were hospitalized because of the flu; during that same time frame last year, 8,633 people were hospitalized. That’s a 98% decrease in hospitalizations — a massive difference. Flu-related deaths are also down from last year, reports the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention. Last year, about 22,000 adults and 195 children died due to the flu; this year, there’s been roughly 450 adult deaths and just one recorded pediatric death.

This isn’t a coincidence. We can likely thank COVID precautions, including hand washing, social distancing, and mask wearing, for our lighter-than-usual flu season, says Jessica Malaty Rivera, MS, infectious disease epidemiologist and science communication lead at The COVID Tracking Project. Influenza is a respiratory virus, and similar to COVID-19, it’s spread via droplets that are made when people talk, sneeze, or cough. So it stands to reason that the same measure we know prevents the SARS-CoV-2 virus from spreading will work against the flu too. Maybe even better, since the virus that causes the flu has a shorter infectious period than COVID, Rivera points out. “The infectious period for COVID-19 includes the pre-symptomatic phase and even asymptomtic cases. That’s not the case with influenza,” she says.

Flu vaccines were also more popular this year, with 193.7 million distributed in the 2020-2021 season compared to 175 million in the 2019-2020 season, according to the CDC. The flu shot can help keep you from getting sick, and can keep you from spreading the virus to others too.

The fact that so many schools were closed over the winter probably helped keep this flu season manageable as well, Rivera says, since schools are typically hotspots for spreading germs. In general, with many more people than usual working from home — and not taking public transport or working in congregate settings — there have been fewer chances for the illnesses spread.

That said, the ongoing COVID-19 vaccine rollout means schools are beginning to re-open and people are going back into work. The CDC says that it’s possible for flu cases to increase in the coming months. Luckily, if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, there’s still time. “It’s only too late when the seasonal supply of flu vaccine is exhausted,” Charles Golden, DO, vice president and executive medical director, CHOC Children’s Primary Care Network, previously told Refinery29. “We typically recommend the flu vaccine for anyone who hasn’t had one in that season, even as late as April or May. Some protection is better than none.”

A less-aggressive flu season has definitely been a beacon of light during our collective experience living through a pandemic. But it’s still essential to keep doing what we’ve been doing all year: social distancing, staying home and avoid crowded areas, washing our hands, wearing masks, and keeping our surfaces clean. Although we’re at the tail end of flu season, we’re not quite out of the woods yet.

Lately, the GOP has had a lot of pressing issues to complain about: Dr. Seuss, Potato Head, and now, President Joe Biden’s choice nickname for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. During Wednesday’s House Democratic Caucus Virtual Issues Conference, Biden innocuously asked “Nance” whether he should take questions, and now, Republicans are up in arms, which has raised questions about whether they understand what a meeting is or how nicknames work.

“Nance” began trending on Twitter shortly after a video of Biden’s comments went viral, even though many have pointed out that Biden has known Pelosi for decades so it’s not particularly surprising that he would call her a shortened version of her name. To make matters even more nonsensical, this outrage is coming from the very same people who mocked and disrespected Dr. Jill Biden’s title and supported a former president about whom there exists an entire Wikipedia page devoted to derogatory nicknames he has given everyone from Biden to Elizabeth Warren to Ted Cruz.

And then things became even more convoluted. Some began to theorize that Pelosi is controlling Biden because he casually said, “I’m happy to take questions…Nance, whatever you want me to do.” Others said the White House shut down the feed as Biden tried to answer questions. The latter likely stems from the fair criticism Biden has faced from both sides of the aisle for taking longer than usual to hold a formal press conference. (“We look forward to holding a full formal press conference, but in the meantime the president takes questions from the reporters covering the White House regularly, including this morning,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told CNN this week.)

That said, Wednesday’s event was not a press conference; it was a meeting led by Pelosi, so it makes sense that he would ask if she’d like for him to answer questions. Republicans were also furious that Biden’s microphone cut out at the end of the livestream, but he reportedly did answer questions off-camera, which is not out of the ordinary for meetings like this one. As reporter Dave Weigel noted on Twitter, Fox News ran a story about Biden refusing to answer questions from House Democrats at the event along with a story about a question he answered the same night.

The video allegedly shows proof that Pelosi is preventing Biden from speaking and controlling the questions he receives, but as usual, it went viral without context. There is nothing inherently sinister about the President asking the House Speaker a question about the proceedings of an event. And, of course, “Nance” is a normal nickname — the same cannot be said for Donald Trump’s “Crazy Nancy” moniker.
