The arrival of summer always brings the sudden urge to throw our laptops and run outside, spending as much of our free time in the sun as possible. Even the indoorsiest among us would be so inclined to venture outdoors, to be up for anything that doesn’t involve being confined to the walls of their homes.
But when it comes to any type of outdoor activity, choosing the right shoe is crucial — and in most situations, a towering platform or heeled mule just won’t do. Enter the “dad sandal,” a reliable standby for all things outdoorsy that’s not only practical, but undeniably comfortable. They boast all the appeal of the chunky, “ugly-cute” styles that have had a stronghold on footwear trends over the last few years, all while offering the support you (and your arches) need.
We admit: Styling "dad sandals" — with their busy prints and in-your-face colors and countless straps — can seem intimidating at first. But this season’s iterations lean more chic than “dad." See: Chaco's summer lineup. That's why we plucked five styles and pieced together cute-but-practical outfits for whatever your summer plans may be, whether that involves some light walking or, well, climbing up the side of a mountain.
Consider this your guide on how to seamlessly integrate dad sandals into all of your outdoorsy summer ‘fits.
Hitting the trails
A dad sandal is a less clunky (and sweaty) alternative to a classic hiking boot, making them a solid choice for summer hikes. These boast adjustable straps to ensure the most secure fit, while the supportive sole will keep your feet in tip-top condition no matter how many miles you trek. And while this style is peak dad, the print makes for a trendy addition to your hiking ensemble: Pair with a sleek workout set, a bold fannypack to hold your essentials, and don’t forget to bring a packable, waterproof jacket — you never know when you might run into sudden rainy weather.
When checking a new city off of your bucket list, you’re bound to do a serious amount of walking. Paired with sweltering summer temps, things are likely to get sweaty, too — may we suggest a breezy linen set that’ll keep you nice and cool? Footwear-wise, we recommend having some fun in the print department, especially if the rest of your ‘fit is neutral. Equipped with an extra-cushy sole, these neon sandals will keep sore feet at bay as you exceed your usual step count. Throw in some chic accessories, and you have yourself a look that’ll seamlessly take you from sightseeing to dinner.

Vacationing by the beach
If your summer plans entail vacationing in a far-off, tropical destination, then chances are, you’ll be spending most of your time at the beach (or poolside…or both). That said, a lightweight slide you can easily kick off is a key item to add to your packing list. A neutral-hued style will match anything and everything you squeeze into your suitcase, including a printed bikini or a vibrant coverup. This pair features a soft sole and arch support, perfect for a shoreside stroll after a quick dip.

Camping plans? Whether you’re roughing it out in the woods or opting for a cushier glamping experience, a chunky all-terrain sandal with excellent grip is imperative for exploring your surroundings. Pair with comfy clothing made for moving, a backpack that’ll hold all your gear, and a hat for extra sun protection. Don’t forget to pack something warm and cozy for nighttime — it’s bound to get chilly, even around the campfire. And if you really want to lean into the dad style trend, try throwing some soft, fuzzy socks into the mix.

Picnicking in the park
Whether you’re posting up in an urban oasis or somewhere with rougher ground (a national park, perhaps?) picnic dressing should prioritize comfort as much as style, especially when it comes to your shoes. A dad sandal with a lugged outsole will prevent you from slipping should you encounter some mud, while a cushioned sole will keep your feet happy as you hunt for the ideal spot to set up shop. Pair yours with a breezy sundress, a tote (for carrying snacks, of course), and some summery accessories, and you’ll have yourself the perfect picnic ensemble — one that’s cute and practical.
A casual night out never looked so cute. Maude Apatow sports a stylish and sweet look while leaving her hotel with family in Paris. The boots and shorts combo are personally making my heart leap as I imagine switching out my cowboy boots for an edgier pair. Let’s recreate this look for less.
The starlet paired some classic light wash denim shorts with a high neck tank. I’ll take any excuse to look for denim from American Eagle. The quality and longevity speak volumes, and this light wash pair—available through size 24—will be a staple you reach for again and again.
Paired with a basic cropped tank from H&M, this has all the makings of an on-trend night out look.
Worn unbuttoned, a button-down blouse can serve as a lightweight outerwear option for summer, in addition to elevating a look from day to night. I’m loving this option from Amazon to use and reuse as outerwear completing this look, or workwear for the day after your night out.
Cinching the look completely are some chunky faux leather boots from Boohoo that bring some of the classic Y2K fashion into your wardrobe.
Maude’s sunglasses are Chanel, but you can find a similar pair here at Target, also available in a stunning amber color. Keep it casual with some small hoops and you will rock this look!
It’s time for another annual cosmic ritual to take place in our skies: Neptune retrograde. Starting on June 28 and lasting until December 3, the Planet of Illusion, Dreams, and Fantasies will appear to spin backwards, sending our perception of our lives and the world around us into a bit of a topsy-turvy ride.
Narayana Montúfar, senior astrologer for Astrology.com and author of Moon Signs: Unlock Your Inner Luminary Power, says that Neptune is one of the trickiest planets to master and understand. “At its best, it is a source of spiritual inspiration, compassion, and universal oneness — at its worst, it surrounds us in a cloud of fog and confusion, making it hard for us to see the correct way to move forward,” she says. “When Neptune is direct and activating a sensitive planet or area of our charts, it puts a veil over our eyes.” If we’re not careful, Montúfar says that the planet can surround us in a world of fantasy, “creating an aura that seems glamorous but that in reality leads to self-deception.”
But we’re not talking about Neptune direct here — we’re talking about Neptune retrograde, the transit that’s about to hit us for the next five-ish months. Once it enters its backwards dance, the tides will turn, and that foggy veil will be lifted. Montúfar warns that this lucid of a worldview can be a bit of a shock at first. “This is when unwanted realities might hit us, especially if we haven’t been channeling the positive and spiritual vibration of Neptune,” she says. It’s not that brutal out here, though — Montúfar says that “Neptune retrograde can help us find a deeper meaning for our lives and how we relate to the overall collective vibration.”
Now, we can see things for what they truly are — good or bad, love or lust, unjust or fair. Again, this can be a shock, but it makes us all the more wiser, more powerful, and ready to take meaningful action. “We may notice where we have been lying to ourselves or looking at a situation with rose-colored glasses,” says Madi Murphy, co-founder of the CosmicRx. “This will allow us to manifest hopes, dreams and desires that align with our new crystal clear reality.”
Murphy advises us to pay extra attention to where we feel like we can’t ignore certain unhealthy situations, whether it’s at work, in our relationships, or with our finances. “Notice where you are seeing the ‘true’ side of someone or something emerge,” she says. “Don’t let yourself fall in love with someone’s (or something’s) potential: see situations for what they are and be honest with yourself and others.” To accomplish this, Murphy says we may need to redraw some boundaries with people or even redirect our dreams, ideas, and visions to something new.
“To make the most of this time, have compassion for your past self and for others as you actively work to see the whole picture and learn accordingly,” Murphy says. Practicing healthy boundaries and providing yourself with ample self-care are key now, and she advises us to spend time in nature, journal, and work with crystals. “This is a very beneficial time to start a dedicated, daily spiritual practice,” she says. “This can be a very mystical time that helps you make some very real magic in your life.”
Be sure to mark your calendars for July 14, when Venus and Neptune retrograde square off, which Lisa Stardust, astrologer, and author of The Love Deck. says will make us unsure of how to proceed in matters of love and money. “Making financial investments will be unwise at that time,” she says. Maybe skip the fancy, extravagant date and treat yourself to a chill, budget-friendly night in by yourself instead — love and spending can always wait (even if it’s just for a day!).
Iva Naskova, astrologer at the Nebula app, also adds that this particular transit may cause “some relationships [to] go through a rough patch, but it is because this transit helps you see things from a real perspective and can be helpful to see that the person you are with is not the one right for you.” It is, once again, hot girl summer after all, so breakups are bound to happen — and this time, you’ll be able to have a clear head about it.
Seeing things for what they truly are can help us move forward from the toxic things in life: relationships, situationships, jobs, friendships, you name it. And while retrogrades often get a bad rap, Neptune’s is here to help us rather than harm us. You just have to make sure you’re ready for a reality check.

Some will say the biggest question in the ether of the cinematic comedy-drama is if unsupportive boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier) or unforgiving Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) is the true villain ofThe Devil Wears Prada… (it’s Nate). However, I pose a more pressing but under explored question: is Julia Roberts’ character really the villain of My Best Friend’s Wedding or a lovable but misunderstood protagonist?
I fell in love with the 1997 anti-romantic comedy, which is hitting its 25th anniversary, a few years ago, and it has been my go-to for a movie night rewatch ever since. However, my friends’ reaction upon showing them the film has always been an interesting experience. After the credits roll, some have looked at me in horror and proclaim, “Jules is the absolute worst!” They are not totally wrong. However, I can’t help but adore Julia Roberts’ character for her sense of humor, which is as dry as the white wine she sips, and her unbridled commitment to a romance that is doomed from the moment she starts chasing it.
Admittedly, the premise of My Best Friend’s Wedding paints Jules in a garish light. The film follows Julia Roberts’ Julianne “Jules” Potter, a 27-year-old food critic who realizes she’s in love with her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) and decides to try and win him even after he commits to marrying another woman (Cameron Diaz). So how could anyone warm to this woman whose monstrous actions span 105 minutes of dramedy?
Strutting in an oversized men’s Armani suit with her voluminous russet curls bouncing, Jules arrives in New York City with four days to destroy Michael and Kimmy’s (Diaz) wedding. Her composure, however, is swiftly tested as she’s ushered into being Kimmy’s maid of honor and flung into a sea of last-minute wedding preparations. It is in the nitty-gritty of My Best Friend’s Wedding that Jules’ unconventional relatability is revealed. From the beginning, her actions are rooted in her deep care for Michael. Even if misdirected, she is trying to do right by and for him.
The foundation of Jules as a character is pointedly real; initially, she’s not opposed to being single, she’s career-driven, and she lives a life of her own volition (it sounds too good to be true!). Her spiraling actions begin, quite simply, from her desire to cling to the life she has. As the ground begins to shift beneath her feet and someone she dearly loves is changing to an almost seismic degree, she digs in her nails and refuses to move on quietly. Fighting back against change, Jules’ love for Michael is both her armor and her weapon. There’s something deeply resonant about her failure to grapple with ricocheting emotions; unable to get her composure in line, she is left with an intense ardor that she is forced to act on.
Additionally, Jules’ relatable variant of jealousy is rare to see on screen. It’s not a pristine, composed sort of green air but a viscous, all-consuming burning that can’t be brushed away. This jealousy comes to a head in one of Jules’ schemes to humiliate Kimmy with a karaoke bar setup so Michael realizes that Kimmy is even more of a mess than her. It looks like it’s going to plan as Kimmy’s sharp voice wails through the bar — until she wins over the crows and has Michael staring at her in awe. The camera pans and Jules, surprisingly, looks impressed. It’s the first crack in her unhinged plan, exposing the softness that exists in her character. It’s not Kimmy she hates, but the situation.
Jules may be the chaotic protagonist of My Best Friend’s Wedding, but her journey results in a touching appreciation for platonic love. The film ends with Jules in the arms of George (Rupert Everett). He is her gay best friend (deserving of a sequel of his own) who has been a rock throughout the whole ordeal — bar the time he thoroughly embarrassed Jules and then serenaded her with “I Say A Little Prayer” in a packed restaurant — and the platonic love they share is something Jules learns to treasure. It’s a heartfelt dimension of her character that sees a deep appreciation for the facets of platonic love, realized with beautiful resonance.
Though Jules bristles with self-confidence, there’s an exposing rawness to the brutality of her actions. She may be a nightmarish whirlwind, but it’s almost impressive, dare I say aspirational, how far the “I don’t give a fuck” attitude gets her. Jules repeatedly acts on pure emotional desire in a way that would only ever exist in my daydreams. You get the impression that if it came down to it, she probably wouldn’t start screaming as the priest states “speak now or forever hold your peace.” She might have come to terms with Kimmy and Michael’s relationship, but in that moment of bated breath, you know she’d be thinking about it.
A Hollywood sweetheart known for Pretty Woman and Notting Hill, Roberts embodies Jules with a magnetic charm. Though her actions may be questionable, she remains lovable as the credits roll. In retrospect, maybe there’s no villain at all in My Best Friend’s Wedding, just a collection of flawed characters trying their best to love each other as they crave the same love in return. In the end, I’d question whether Jules ever truly believed Michael was the love of her life because… well, it usually works out in the movies.

Oil Blends for Hair Growth – 12 Wonderful and Beneficial Carrier Oils You Can Use
By Jacqueline Samaroo
The use of various types of carrier oils dates back to ancient times. They have been used in many different cultures to aid massages, as medicinal treatments, for aromatherapy, and as ingredients in skincare products. Carrier oils have also been used on their own, as well as in oil blends, for natural hair growth.
Keep reading as we go through the benefits of a dozen readily available carrier oils you can add to your natural haircare routine.
A carrier oil is a plant oil that can be used to dilute essential oils before these are applied to the skin. They help to carry the essential oil into your skin, hence their name. Carrier oils are also known as base oils and fixed oils (since they do not evaporate quickly when applied).
Carrier oils are a necessity as they make essential oils more convenient to use. Essential oils are very potent and volatile (evaporate easily). Applying undiluted essential oil directly to your skin can lead to burns, blisters, allergic reactions, and respiratory issues.
Many of them have little to no scent so although they are used in much greater proportion to essential oils in an oil blend, they do not overpower the essential oil’s scent. Also, carrier oils add their own individual health benefits to an oil blend but DIYers should be aware that different carrier oils will have different effects on the final color, scent, and shelf life of an oil blend.
Definitely! Carrier oils are nutrient-rich, generally with plenty of fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants, and other good-for-your-hair phytochemicals. It is quite okay, usually, to apply carrier oils liberally when using them on their own. Persons with sensitive skin, however, should proceed with caution and all persons are best advised to do a simple patch test first.
12 Carrier oils to use in oil blends for hair growth
We are covering 12 carrier oils, including some of the most popular ones but this is by no means an exhaustive list. We’d love to hear from you about any of your own favorite carrier oils that did not make our list.
Argan oil is closely associated with Morocco where the trees are endemic and closely intertwined in that country’s culture. The oil is made from the kernels of the tree’s fruits. It is a deep yellow color and has a nutty aroma. Compared to other carrier oils, argan oil has an average absorption rate and leaves the skin feeling silky.
Benefits of argan oil for hair growth
Argan oil is one of the best-known oils in haircare. It has quite a high percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids, as well as large quantities of vitamins A and E. It is a popular ingredient in many types of moisturizing natural haircare products. It can be used as a scalp massage oil to help boost your scalp care routine.
The moringa tree, also known as the drumstick tree, grows widely across India. Its seeds are rich in oil that is pale yellow with an earthy scent and has a long shelf life. Moringa oil gets used in a wide range of skincare and haircare products that make use of its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Benefits of moringa oil for hair growth
Moringa oil is an excellent source of fatty acids, as well as iron, magnesium, and vitamins C, B2, and B6. It also contains proteins that help to strengthen hair as the oil moisturizes and protects the hair and scalp. It has become increasingly popular as a carrier oil to use in oil blends for hair growth.
The macadamia tree is native to Australia where indigenous peoples have long used it as a source of food. The oil extracted from the macadamia nut can be used in cooking as well as in cosmetics. It is a lightweight oil with a clear, lightly-amber color and a mild, nutty scent.
Benefits of macadamia oil for hair growth
Macadamia oil contains several minerals, including iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, and copper. It has high levels of several fatty acids, so apart from nourishing your scalp it also works as an emollient, lubricating, protecting, and moisturizing both hair and scalp.
Grapeseed oil is a by-product of the wine-making process. The seeds are removed from the crushed grapes and the oil extracted. Grapeseed oil has a light yellowish-green color and a slightly sweet and mild nutty scent. The oil is lightweight and thus easily absorbed into the skin. For this reason, some persons prefer grapeseed oil to olive oil for skin and haircare.
Benefits of grapeseed oil for hair growth
Grapeseed oil is rich in vitamin E and has antioxidant properties to help protect cells from free-radical damage. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, helping to heal and soothe the scalp of irritation. It leaves hair shiny and silky without any greasy buildup.
Flaxseed oil (linseed oil or flax oil) comes from the flax plant which grows in several regions around the world. It ranges from yellowish to colorless and has a nutty flavor. Flaxseed oil gets used in cooking, as a dietary supplement, and in many industrial applications, such as linoleum production.
Benefits of flaxseed oil for hair growth
Nutrient-dense flaxseed is often hailed as a superfood for your body. These nutrients also contribute to healthy hair and scalp when flaxseed oil is used in oil blends for hair growth. It is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, helping it to reduce inflammation and promote scalp health.
Avocado oil is extracted from the pulp of avocados, making it a fruit oil. The cold-pressed and unrefined version of the oil is similar in both color and scent to avocado pulp. Avocado oil is comparable to olive oil in terms of how heavy and thick it is. It does have the tendency to leave skin feeling greasy.
Benefits of avocado oil for hair growth
High levels of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, help avocado oil effectively combat the symptoms of dry skin, including dry scalp. It also contains appreciable amounts of vitamin E, as well as vitamins A and D. You should keep in mind, however, that avocado oil usually is not recommended for acne-prone skin.
The neem tree is native to several regions in Africa as well as in India. All parts of the plant are traditionally put to use, making it culturally significant in the areas where it grows. Neem oil (margosa oil) is extracted from both the seeds and fruits of the plant. It ranges in color from dark brown to golden yellow and even bright red. It has a garlicky and peanuty scent.
Benefits of neem oil for hair growth
Neem oil is rich in phytochemicals (plant compounds) that give it a range of benefits for scalp and haircare when used on its own or in oil blends for hair growth. These benefits include being rich in both triglycerides and antioxidants, making it moisturizing, protective, and reparative for your hair and scalp.
Sunflower oil is extracted from sunflower seeds. It has a light amber color and a scent often described as slightly fatty. In recent years, sunflower oil has surged in popularity as a healthy cooking oil and as an ingredient in the making of cosmetics and haircare products.
Benefits of sunflower oil for hair growth
Sunflower oil is an excellent emollient that is rich in both oleic acid (a monounsaturated fatty acid) and linoleic acid (a polyunsaturated fatty acid). It also has large quantities of vitamin E. It softens and moisturizes the skin, including scalp skin, while also soothing irritation. Acting as a skin barrier, sunflower oil helps to protect the scalp from toxins and germs.
Shea oil comes from the oil-rich nuts of the shea tree which is indigenous to Africa. The oil is closely related to shea butter since it is, in fact, obtained from shea butter. The process involves removing components that make the butter waxy and cause it to solidify. Shea oil also has a much milder scent than shea butter’s nutty aroma.
Benefits of shea oil for hair growth
Shea oil has many of the skin and haircare benefits of shea butter. It restores moisture and suppleness to very dry, damaged skin. It improves elasticity and hydrates dry hair. Shea oil is lightweight and readily absorbed without leaving behind a greasy residue. This makes it quite suitable for regular use, including being used as a pre-poo and as an oil treatment.
Unrefined coconut oil is derived from the fresh meat (hardened flesh) of mature coconuts. It has a distinct coconut scent and readily solidifies below room temperature. It has a myriad of uses from cooking to cosmetics to industrial applications.
Benefits of coconut oil for hair growth
Unrefined coconut oil has long been used in skin and hair care, being hailed for its high vitamin E, fatty acid, and polyphenol content. It is readily absorbed and helps to combat dryness as it conditions the scalp and hair. In fact, unrefined coconut oil, all on its own, makes an excellent leave-in conditioner. However, persons with acne-prone skin usually are advised to avoid using it.
Kukui nut oil (candlenut oil) comes from the kukui tree which has important cultural significance in Hawaii where it is known as the “tree of light.” The lightweight oil is extracted from the large walnut-looking nuts and has a light to dark yellow color. Kukui oil has a very mild nutty scent.
Benefits of kukui nut oil for hair growth
Kukui nut oil has emollient properties, contributing to its moderate amount of fatty acids. It is also rich in vitamins A, C, and E. Kukui nut oil is readily absorbed by the scalp and strands, helping to eliminate the symptoms of dry skin. It does not clog pores and may actually provide some relief from acne and similar skin conditions.
Jojoba oil is a strongly moisturizing oil (more correctly, wax) extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub. The plant is native to California and Mexico and has traditionally been put to use by Native Americans in the region. Jojoba oil has a clear golden color and a slightly nutty scent.
Benefits of jojoba oil for hair growth
Jojoba oil contains fatty acids and triglycerides and has an extremely long shelf life. It is very close in consistency to the skin’s natural sebum which itself is a waxy/oily substance. Jojoba oil is readily absorbed by the skin and does not block pores. It has been shown to help alleviate acne symptoms.
I’ve largely associated Megababe with its best-selling, anti-chafing Thigh Rescue. After trying it last year, it quickly beat out just about any other chub-rub remedy I’ve tried thus far, and I assumed that was probably the extent of wellness solutions I’d find from Katie Sturino’s powerhouse brand. Little did I know that only months later another Megababe product would alter my preconceptions of body care. Enter Megababe’s clean-scented, mineral-forward natural deodorant Geo Deo. It kept my body odor at bay and finally converted me to the natural-deodorant fan club.
One Megababe reviewer gushed about the powers of Geo Deo, claiming “This deodorant covers any smell I might have, which has never happened! Even when I used regular deodorant with aluminum I would still smell if I was super anxious. This has been a game-changer for me! I can go all day without having to clean and reapply and I DON’T SMELL! This is the absolute best deodorant ever!!”
I’ve been using the Geo Deo for many months now, and I, too, have so many positive feelings about this product. Read on for my review of Geo Deo, including a breakdown of everything you need to know about the product and my experience using it over the past few months.
Geo Deo comes in a small cylindrical plastic container in monochromatic blue. It fits easily in most purses, but you may run into a little trouble fitting it into a bag that’s super-thin in width. To apply the deodorant, remove the light-blue cap and twist the navy bottom to push up the deo stick. The consistency is similar to that of a traditional powdery deodorant, but it’s a little thicker, more like a light paste. At $14 for a 2.6 oz. stick, it’s definitely not cheap, but I find the benefits and efficacy outweigh the more expensive price point. Plus, a higher price tag is typical for natural deodorants.
I apply a few swipes of Geo Deo, and I usually am okay for many hours or even the whole day without reapplying. I’ve even noticed less irritation in my armpit area and a reduction of bumps since I’ve been using this product.

For years, I heard about the benefits of natural deodorant. People spoke of the role sweat plays in regulating body temperature and how antiperspirant interferes with this because it contains aluminum, a metal that prevents sweating and clogs pores in the process. I have hyperhidrosis, which means I sweat a lot more than the average person, so antiperspirant deodorant has never really stopped sweating for me. However, it has always kept me from smelling super stinky, so I definitely saw natural deodorant’s allure. But no brand seemed to be a match for my B.O. I’d have to reapply it constantly to keep from stinking up a space.
I started using Geo Deo back in the late fall of 2021. It wasn’t intentional to be completely honest. I ran out of my Secret gel deodorant and remembered I’d received a PR package with a few Megababe deodorants in it. Although the Green Deo and the Smoothie smelled wonderful, my body’s individual chemistry worked best with the blue Geo Deo. The deodorizing mineral mix of baking soda, kaolin clay, zinc oxide, and magnesium hydroxide were perfect for combatting my body’s B.O. and smelled clean and light (its scented with eucalyptus, cedarwood, and mint) as well. Too much baking soda in deodorant can alter skin’s pH balance and cause irritation. However, only half of the standard amount was used in Geo Deo for the perfect mix of impactful ingredients.
I apply a few swipes of Geo Deo, and I usually am okay for many hours or even the whole day without reapplying. I’ve even noticed less irritation in my armpit area and a reduction of bumps since I’ve been using this product, which may have to do with the fact that it contains soothing ingredients like shea butter, colloidal oatmeal, and sea buckthorn. I suspect my pores are no longer clogged with aluminum, and the Geo Deo has had a moisturizing effect on my pits. The biggest pitfall is that it transfers on clothing occasionally, especially if I apply too much. On darker clothes, it can be more noticeable, so I try to remember less is more. Fortunately, stains come out pretty easily in the wash.
When it comes down to it, this is the best natural deodorant I have ever tried. It singlehandedly made me believe it was possible to be fully protected from bad B.O with unharmful ingredients taking the lead.
