Overcoming Fearful Thoughts by Recognizing How God Wants Me to Feel – Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu’s Journey to Calm #HERJourney

Overcoming Fearful Thoughts by Recognizing How God Wants Me to FeelHERjourney with Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu

“Every time I begin to question why things are the way they are, or why I’m currently facing a difficult situation, or how long I’m supposed to be in this phase in my life, I remind myself that God has a bigger plan for me and He doesn’t want me to feel anxious about where I am right now.”

Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu, a Writer/Screenwriter in San Jose, CA.

How long have you been on a self-healing or spiritual journey?
I’ve been on a self-healing journey for 3/4 years.

What event, situation, or life circumstance sparked your journey?
It all started when my sister got married and moved out. I realized that with we balanced each other and when she was no longer around, that balance shifted, which opened the gate to a lot of unresolved issues, and things that I hadn’t really coped with. I would say within the last year, I’ve done more work to heal and sit with my pain because everything is clearer to me now than it was 4 years ago.

What’s your primary practice?
My primary practice to help with healing is by reading excerpts that remind me healing and growing is all part of the journey. There are times when it’s going to hurt and other times, it’s going to feel beautiful. I also log my thoughts in my journal, which helps with clearing the mind. It prevents me from allowing those thoughts, concerns, fears to consume me and make me anxious.

How has it benefited you mentally, physically/materially, and/or spiritually?
By doing these things, I find myself feeling less anxious and jumping the gun. Instead of making up scenarios in my head, I am able to bring myself to calmness and walk myself through the emotion that I’m feeling instead of going from 0-100 based on anxious or fearful thoughts.

Spiritually, I believe that it has made my relationship with God stronger. I had spoken to Nikki briefly about my anxiety and she said something that has helped me so much: “This is not how God wants me to feel.”

Every time I begin to question why things are the way they are, or why I’m currently facing a difficult situation, or how long I’m supposed to be in this phase in my life, I remind myself that God has a bigger plan for me and he doesn’t want me to feel anxious about where I am right now. It definitely takes practice to have this type of mindset. I know it didn’t happen for me overnight. But reminding yourself every single day of this, and doing the things that help you clear your mind and take the weight off your chest, all help collectively with your healing journey.

What’s your top three favorite books?

Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks
Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks
Start with Why by Simon Sinek

Have you faced any challenges since beginning? How did you overcome?
The challenges I have faced have been discomfort. Being on a journey of self-healing, one thing I realized is that I often responded from a place of fear, and that response allowed me to create an illusion of control. So, now I have to challenge myself to not respond and react by emotional muscle memory, which was birthed from a mindset of fear; and instead respond from a new place, which is a spirit of healing.

Share one of the biggest winks or nods from God/The Universe that let you know you’re on the right path!
I don’t know if this would count as a sign from God that I’m on the right path, but when I find myself turning to Him or looking inward to see how I can improve or what part of me still needs work, I take it as a sign that God wants me to work on that part of myself because the next chapter of my life is going to demand a different version of myself. If I don’t do the work to improve or heal, I’ll stay stuck where I am and not move forward.

Advice or counsel for those looking to get started on the journey!
My advice to anyone who wants to start their journey in healing is that it’s necessary to explore it, even if you don’t think you need to heal or be on a spiritual journey. However, when you do begin, you realize a lot about yourself and it helps you become a better version of yourself.
