Hair Wellness Movement Aims to Help Men With Balding Issues

Bald is beautiful, or so the old saying goes. Whether you’re talking about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham or any number of other A-List Hollywood hunks sporting bare heads, the stigma around male pattern baldness seems to be receding – no pun intended. In 2019, according to the NYT, the term “hair loss” is now being replaced with a more positive spin in the form of “hair wellness,” which can help more men deal with balding.

Hair Wellness

Many men (and women) wrestle with balding, a personal shame to some and point of pride for others, though more commonly it is the former which makes headlines. Reddit forums such as r/tressless act as impromptu support groups for people who are anxiety-ridden over their lack of locks, and an almost incalculable amount of money is spent battling baldness each and every year.

To sum it up: going bald is still a big deal for men, and no matter how you cut it, hair is important to a lot of dudes.

However, hair wellness is a booming market trend precisely because it doesn't trade on the fear and shame of the products in the past. Hair wellness brand Hims recently shared its stance on the subject: “We hope to enable a conversation that’s currently closeted. Men aren’t supposed to care for themselves. We call bullshit.”

And how, exactly, does hair wellness tackle the problem of male balding? By borrowing some sage advice from women, tackling concepts like split ends, thinning strands and volumizing, in addition to taking a holistic approach to hair care. Instead of focusing on one narrow element, companies such as Hims want men to understand that there's more to keeping your hair than simply slapping on some Rogaine and calling it a day.

What Options Are Out There?

Unfortunately, at the moment the options aren’t all that simple. Hims and other companies like it provide access to generic drugs finasteride and minoxidil, with the former drug being extremely popular among balding men. The catch? There are some common sexual side effects (lack of libido, most notably) that come along with finasteride, and research has been done to see if the drug can also increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer, with studies showing mixed results.

The fact that, despite the risks, finasteride remains a hot seller should reveal everything we need to know about the relationship between men and a full head of hair. That is to say, it matters deeply to many, with men willing to put their sex lives and perhaps entire life on the line in service of improving their image.

Hair wellness is a growing movement meant to build a bride of support (and supporting products) for just these sorts of men. Hopefully, with increased awareness of how deep the pain associated with hair loss can be, a kinder and more compassionate understanding can develop.

Send nudes. A simple, two-word sentence that has become an internet meme popular in all corners of the world. However, it's become a bit of common knowledge that a lot of the nudes sent are not actually wanted. However, a new dating app is attempting to address the problem but encouraging users to send nudes.

Enter the BARE Dating app, the brainchild of Alex Sargent, Gillian Myhill, and Phil Beesley. The trio decided that today's dating space and dating apps were a bit tired and too generalized and unspecific to match the deep demand for a customized, comfortable romantic pool.

In his most recent remarks on the upcoming launch of the BARE service, Beesley made it quite clear that in the group’s eyes, d*ck pics don't have to come with such a negative stigma attached, necessarily.

“The issue of unsolicited [penis] pics is that they are ‘unsolicited.' There are many who would like to receive these if they are given a choice,” Beesley told Forbes. “To be in a flirtatious conversation with someone — and slowly revealing yourself to that person little by little is a very sexy thing.”

So, ladies and gentlemen, you can start hitting BARE if you're looking for something a little naughtier and more risque. A custom crop tool is built into the app which allows you to take your selfies and block out parts you don't want to send. Want to take a snapshot of your whole body and then reveal it one portion at a time like a virtual striptease? You can. That's what makes it so hot, according to the developers.

“The endless swiping culture is not only tedious but also extremely superficial, especially if you have a certain set of needs when dating,” Beesley said. “People want options... We want BARE to become a place for people to be comfortable with talking about and showing off their body under their terms.”

The main difference between people sending unsolicited nudes on other dating apps, and sending your pics on BARE? Consent. In order to sign up for BARE, you'll need to provide authentic and valid government ID proving your age, and you'll also be held to account for your behavior on the platform. No guys and girls trying to gross out everyone else with unwanted advances this time around, but if you want to get down and dirty with someone who's also into it — that's what the platform is here for.

A little more modest by nature? That's fine too, as Beesly points out.

“It effectively makes sexting safe and is the first dating app to do so... But if you choose to only show your eyes or the curve of your lower back, then that is completely your choice.”

Maybe we can have our nudes with chivalry and courtship in 2019, after all.

Paperclipping Is the Latest Dating Trend That You Need to Know

By now, nearly everyone knows about ghosting — the practice of basically saying “byeeeeeeeee” to someone you may have signaled interest in dating, but without ever actually saying anything to them (how rude!). At least according to at least one love expert, there's an even more annoying trend in dating — paperclipping.

According to Samantha Rothenberg, artist and creative mind behind the notion of “paperclipping,” (courtesy Clippy, the paperclip in earlier versions of Microsoft Word) is feeling the pain of being harassed by Clippy over and over and over again. In Rothenberg’s cartoons, his faux-cheerful wire smile and huge anime-style eyes at once comforting and creepy, “pop up for no reason at all” and don’t want you to forget they exist.

To hear the illustrator tell it, her own brief dating experience with a particularly flaky fellow served as motivation to bring Clippy back to life in 2019, the iconic character now reincarnated as an emblem for needy yet distant people in today's high-tech dating pool.

“I dated a guy briefly, though he'd continue to text me randomly weeks and months after it fizzled,” Rothenberg told NBC News. “Sometimes I'd answer with a monosyllabic response, and sometimes I'd just ignore him. He eventually took the hint and I never heard from him again.”

Perhaps even worse than ghosting — and certainly more aggravating — paperclipping relies on the emotional boomerang effect to do maximum damage to one's emotions. Sort of like the older term “emotional vampire,” those who engage in so-called paperclipping do so because of their own damaged selves, their own insecurities, feeding their own sense of validation by tapping others regardless of how that person might feel about the contact.

The bottom line? It might be best to completely avoid people who attempt to dart in and out of your life without paying lip service to your own emotional, physical, and romantic needs. As useless and annoying as Clippy was, those bad boys and girls who now adopt his namesake as Paperclippers could be even more harmful to your mental health and sense of well-being.

Burt Reynolds Smokey Trans Am Up for Auction by U.S. Marshals

Fans of Smokey and the Bandit might be interested in where Burt Reynolds’ iconic 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, “Smokey” might have ended up. The memento of that signature silver screen effort is going up for auction in the unlikeliest of places — the U.S. Marshals auction block.

Up for grabs is a car from Burt Reynolds' personal collection, a 1978 Trans Am hardtop sporting the unforgettable golden firebird splashed across the hood. As you might guess, this ride comes with bucket seats and a customized suspension — and of course, Bandit Run decals everywhere. Despite the auction closing at the end of the day on Saturday, October 26, 59 bids placed on Reynolds' old ride have already driven the price up to $55,025.

(Which might be a bad deal when you consider that the car only has about 3,400 miles on it.)

According to Auto Blog, in an ironic twist of fate which seems to almost pay homage to the outlaw roots celebrated in Smokey and the Bandit, this Trans Am was seized by federal law enforcement officials, having been reclaimed from alleged criminals behind an $800 million investment scheme. The former owners, Jeff and Paulette Carpoff, saw the fleet of vehicles seized from them after being accused of massive fraud — allegedly even managing to hoodwink renowned billionaire Warren Buffett in the process.

While white collar crime may not have the same punch as, say, grand theft auto, stunting, or reckless driving, it certainly explains why this extremely valuable piece of Hollywood Americana is up for auction alongside 148 other high-end rides.

Also up for grabs at this auction? Some Humvees from the 1990s, an ancient and well-preserved 1939 Buick Roadmaster, a 1941 Plymouth Special Delux, and a number of hotrod Mustangs and Camaros from the golden age of American muscle, the 1960s. 

An autograph left behind on the glove box simply reads “Be safe! Burt Reynolds,” a testament to the late actor's sense of humor and humility. Fans of his — and of classic cars in general — looking to scoop up a deal would do well to head down to Woodland, California, this weekend. The U.S. Marshals Auction is to be held at Apple Towing.

Power up the hyperdrive, ready your blaster pistols, and start getting a belt clip ready for your lightsaber — Levi's is here to save the galaxy in true Star Wars fashion. Following in the rather large footsteps of other big style collabs such as Fenty x Savage and a somewhat similar Levi's x Stranger things lineup, it looks like the label most famous for their blue jeans is looking to take a new approach in a galaxy not very far away.

With “Rise of the Skywalker” coming to theaters this holiday season and expected to smash box-office records as the conclusion of the newest Star Wars trilogy warps to the silver screen, it makes perfect sense for the brand to launch new gear. Given the massive hype train building up steam around this inevitable battle between Rey and Kylo Ren — light side and dark side, Jedi and Sith respectively — there’s really no better time than now for Levi's to team up with Disney and Lucasfilm to kick off their own casual-chic rebellion.

Traditional casualwear like t-shirts, hoodies, and trucker jackets are all going to be part of this glossy, sci-fi infused collection. Levi's promises that a nerdy blend of fan-favorite one-liners will also be splashed across some of the offerings. For example, Darth Vader's iconic “I am your father” line will be represented on some items in the Levi's x Star Wars collab, as will the title crawl lede of “In a galaxy far, far away,” and Chewbacca's signature “GGWWWRGHH!” roar. (At least, we think that's how it's spelled.)

And it's not only diehard force-wielding fans who are super amped up over the idea of getting to rep an American brand with an intergalactic twist; Levi's executive Jonathan Cheung was equally excited in his remarks concerning the deal.

“Lucasfilm and Levi’s are San Francisco neighbors. When we found out that the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga was coming at the end of 2019, we bundled up our Jedi and headed to Lucasfilm looking for Droids,” Cheung said. “And here’s [a] barely known, fun fact: Luke Skywalker was wearing Levi’s in the original trilogy — white Levi’s! Now it’s our turn to return the compliment with Vader, droids, Chewie and Leia.”

One of the coolest looks of the collection — a pocketed black jacket covered in cosmic colors, X-Wing fighters, Millennium Falcons, and Death Stars — comes in both men's and women’s, with matching pants. If that's not enough Star Wars swagger for you, there are also co-branded beanies, snapbacks, and even a fanny pack with the Levi's logo fused with the iconic golden Star Wars font.

Beat that, Star Trek.

“Rise of the Skywalker” will premiere on December 20 in the United States, and if previous results are any indication, the film will almost certainly clear well over $1 billion. The first outing, “The Force Awakens,” actually managed to eke out just over $2 billion in global box office revenue, with the commercially panned sequel, “The Last Jedi,” still managed a respectable $1.31 billion.

Star Wars is big money no matter what, with Disney pushing it into the stratosphere with the November launch of Disney Plus. Levi's is as iconic now as it ever was. Together, the two could rule the galaxy.

Adidas to Launch Star Wars Stormtrooper Sneakers

When most people think of Adidas, athletic sneakers often spring to mind. Collabs with famous NBA players, soccer superstars and other athletes top the list of celebrity ties-in common to the famous black and white brand. Now, it seems that the Force is strong with the sneaker brand’s newest Adidas Nite Jogger “Star Wars Edition” kicks.

The newest line of sneakers, according to YankeeKicks on Instagram, are monochromatic with a decidedly dark-sided edge. The shoes include gray suede, checkered laces, and a mostly white upper frame, resulting in a design which is equally suited for taking on the rebels as it is for supporting your feet for a late-night food run.

The technical specs are pretty impressive as well. According to Business Insider, the original Nite Jogger is a reimagining of the original 1979 Adidas offering, only enhanced by advancements in sports science in the interim. Nick Offerman Launching His Own Lagavulin Scotch

Fans of ‘Parks and Recreation’ probably recall Ron Swanson keeping a bottle of Lagavulin in his desk at all times, and his emotional pilgrimage to the seaside Scottish distillery, eventually purchasing a majority interest in the company during the show's final season. It seems that Nick Offerman might share his character’s love for scotch, with plans to launch his own.

Oxford English Dictionary Adds New Words: Cocktease, Jedi and Others

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the gold standard among anyone who likes words and is known by academic types and regular people alike as the world's most prestigious and reliable dictionary. However, even the OED is subject to changing with the fast-moving times — even if it means “cocktease” is now officially, a real word.

From Cocktease to Jedi

Some might think cocktease is a bit vulgar for the British sensibilities behind the OED — but you'd be wrong. The nation that brought you biting comedy from the Monty Python troupe to Blackadder is more than proud to present cocktease. Not sure what that means, officially? According to OED, it’s “An individual, usually a girl, who engages (or is thought to be partaking) in cockteasing.”

Also new to the OED... chirpse. Apparently, younger Millennials and members of Gen Z’s have contributed a bunch of new words – to clarify, “chirpse” refers to assertive flirting, a mixture of flirt and chirp. But it wasn't only new terms that made the cut, the old flirty classic 'a little sumpin’ sumpin’' also gained official status.

Sci-fi nerds are also in for quite a treat, too. As it turns out, “Jedi” – among other ‘Star Wars’ terms like lightsabre – is now officially a word according to the OED, meaning that you can deploy the word against your unwitting grandmother during your next game of Scrabble. Everybody knows that those pesky J's can be hard as f*** to get rid of, despite the 8-point value.

Not to be outdone by rad, tubular and bodacious, “chillax” is now also officially a word. It's unclear, as yet, whether or not “Netflix and Chillax” will eventually replace the more mundane “Netflix and Chill.” There's just something a little too turn-of-the-millennium about chillax, conjuring up images of the Budweiser frogs, Wazzup — forgot about that, didn't you — and “Dude, you got a Dell!” (Some things are better left in the past.)

Realness Is In

In a world of appearances, fast content, and faster entertainment, an obsession with authenticity and “realness” has emerged — a trend that is strongly reflected in some other words being added to the lexicon. “Fakie” refers to a false item, be it a breast, butt, nails, or lashes, and “fakeness” stands in as an overall reference to insincerity.

More specifically, wannabe Jamaicans are up on the block. “Jafaican” refers to a non-Jamaican who adopts the pose of Jamaican culture, be it clothing, accent, musical taste, or culinary pursuits.

Fans of one of President Donald Trump's iconic phrases —“fake news”— will be happy to know that the term has been immortalized in the Oxford English Dictionary, in keeping with the aforementioned fixation with exposing falsehoods or impersonations.

With each passing year, it seems that the words added to the OED become less formal and more fluid. What does this signal to the rest of us, and what does it say about our current culture?

Questions for an essay, perhaps. The dictionary is just there to define the words, with deeper meaning being left to the poets — poets who can somehow make cocktease and chillax into something more.

First, food should be on the table as well, with two-thirds of respondents preferring a full-service restaurant experience over hitting the bar for drinks-only. Second, “drinks” no longer means alcoholic beverages alone — a nice cafe serving tea, espresso, coffee, salads, and sandwiches could actually be ideal for a first date.

Also, don't be cheap. Skimping on the quality of the meal in favor of saving your wallet isn't attractive, at least according to Hinge's most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes. And, if you’re not sure what type of food to dine on, Italian is the most popular choice, suggesting that it might be best to consider pizza, pasta and endless garlic bread. Everybody loves endless garlic bread.

Date Night Matchmaker might make your dating life a little easier so you can focus on the more important things right in front of you. After all, you only really get one chance at a first date.

Will Smith Has a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Spin-Off in the Works

Now this is a story all about how the internet got flip-turned upside down. Rumors of a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” spin-off have started to emerge, and it's driving fans of the 1990s sitcom nuts with nostalgia.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Smith is ready to take on the legacy project that people have clamored after for many, many years.

When we last left off with the Banks family, they were selling their Bel-Air mansion after Hilary's talk show relocates to the Big Apple. Cousin Will is sort of left in the lurch after all of the Banks kids discuss their hopes and dreams in the city. With Carlton headed to Princeton and Ashley was set to attend a performing arts school, there’s no telling where things would pick up if a spin-off is brought to television screens. 

Details surrounding the reboot are so far pretty scarce, but early indications suggest that the project is being produced by Westbrook media, a diverse holding company owned by Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Just years ago, prior to the release of 2016's “Suicide Squad,” Smith had previously dispelled rumors of a potential “Fresh Prince” reboot, telling E! News that it would never happen. “I don’t think ever — like, pretty close to when Hell freezes over. Pretty close, like, we’re gonna leave that one alone,” he said.

Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor who played Carlton Banks, was equally critical about any idea of bringing the show back from the dead in remarks made to HuffPost Live.

“If it happened, it wouldn’t be Fresh Prince. It would be something that’s taking the story of the show and having all new people do something,” said Ribeiro. “To me, that’s not ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ There’s one ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ Is Will Smith starring in it? No. Then it ain’t no ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’”

While news regarding any potential castings has also been silent (though it's hard to imagine the project working without its primary actors), it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to see Will Smith cast in a more patriarchal “Uncle Will” role in homage to James Avery's iconic role. Avery, known for playing Uncle Phil, passed away back in 2013.

As it’s been 13 years since the finale of “Fresh Prince” aired, there’s certainly plenty of Banks family antics to catch up on.

The Walking Dead Whiskey Is Here to Help You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse

Having seen an extremely successful run on AMC over the course of the past decade – the 10th season just debuted on October 6 – “The Walking Dead” remains a pop culture phenomenon. And now the perfect beverage is here to bring a boozy touch to surviving the zombie apocalypse – or at least watching it.

“The Walking Dead” Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey offers a stout glass bottle and is part of a larger “Spirits of the Apocalypse” lineup from industry giant Diageo, which promises even more options to come.

“The Walking Dead comic book series changed the game and launched a post-apocalyptic genre that continues to attract a massive, enthusiastic fan base,” Diageo exec Dave McNulty said in a press release. “In partnering with Skybound Entertainment, we saw the opportunity for a new whiskey their adult fan base would covet... We share a mindset of creativity first and real collaboration to bring forth fun, new products that pop in culture.”

The same release also provided some short, simple recipes for cocktails containing the 94 proof (47% ABV) bourbon whiskey. “Maggie's Lemonade” calls for whiskey, peach tea — and, well, lemonade — garnished with a sprig of mint for flavor. Or, if you prefer an “Old Man Rick”, mix up whiskey, a dash of classic aromatic bitters, and half a teaspoon of simple syrup (just like grandma used to make).

If you haven't heard of Diageo, you might be more familiar with its family of brands: Crown Royal, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, Tanqueray, and Guinness all belong to this industry leader. Given that Diageo teamed up with Skybound Entertainment in order to launch this latest zombie-themed alcoholic beverage, CEO of Skybound, David Alpert, also weighed in.

“It's been a joy to work on ‘The Walking Dead’ in so many different ways – from comics, TV, video games, and more. But working on a bourbon? That's a dream come true...” said Alpert. “Our partnership with Diageo arose out of a shared passion for creativity and a love of our fans. We hope our fans enjoy this as much as we do.”

Aside from the bourbon whiskey bearing the TWD brand, the horror-drama series also previously inspired a lineup of wines. A dark cabernet sauvignon, satisfying red blend, creamy chardonnay, and bright sauvignon blanc were all offered last year.

No matter what post-apocalyptic scenario one might face, having a few bottles of booze around no doubt makes things a whole lot more bearable.

John Wick Spinoff Ballerina Focuses on Female Assassin

Audiences across the world gasped in shock as they realized that Daisy, John Wick's beloved dog, was killed by Tarasov during a home invasion. When Wick began to cut a trail of bloody vengeance in Daisy's name, a silver screen legend was born. Now, it seems, a new assassin is in Wick’s future.

After three successful outings as the character, it looks like Keanu Reeves is prepared to take a backseat for a fourth installation of the franchise. According to Deadline, a spinoff series featuring a female assassin is set for production, with Reeves executive producing and Len Wiseman (“Underworld,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” “Total Recall”) directing.

Tentatively titled “Ballerina” (likely because rumors suggest that the lead heroine will come from The Director's ballet class, as seen in “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum”) the film promises to be everything you already love about John Wick films. High-speed chases, intense gunplay, and well-choreographed martial arts are a staple of the franchise, and “Ballerina” will probably feature as much (or more).

So far, it's fairly unclear who will be cast as the main character in “Ballerina”, although Unity Phelan is a name that keeps cropping up in this regard due to her credits as such in the third John Wick film. As of yet though, there aren’t many details, so fans could find themselves surprised by any eventual announcement of the role.

If that wasn't enough good news for John Wick fans, it's also rumored that a TV show based in the same universe is in production. This show will focus its attention on a place rather than a particular person, from early reports, taking place at the chic-yet-dangerous Continental Hotel. Boasting their own rigid rules, security, and an unmistakably cool atmosphere, it’s no surprise that this new show would feature the hotel as the backdrop for their series. In fact, the iconic gold coins used as currency among the league of contract killers taking up residence in The Continental have been so legendary that real-life equivalents struck from silver and gold have become collector's items.

Fans of Keanu Reeves and his character shouldn't feel altogether heartbroken, that he won’t appear in “Ballerina”. As it turns out, the team at Lionsgate is already hard at work producing “John Wick 4” and is expected to hit theaters on May 21, 2021. “Ballerina” is set to follow “John Wick 4”.
